What it remembers

Hariyali Teej, the Teej of green, is the Tritiya of the bright half of Shravana, in July or August, when the rains have turned the land green. It marks the day Lord Shiva accepted Goddess Parvati as his wife. Women wear green, put mehndi on their hands, swing on swings hung from the trees and sing, and married daughters receive the sindhara, gifts from their parents’ home. It is kept above all in Rajasthan, Haryana, Punjab and Uttar Pradesh.

The day Shiva accepted her

Goddess Parvati gave herself to tapas and fasting to win Lord Shiva, who sat lost in meditation. On the bright Tritiya of Shravana, it is told, he accepted her at last as his wife. So women worship her on this day as Teej Mata, the mother of Teej, with Shiva beside her, for a happy married life.

Born a hundred and eight times

Some tell that Goddess Parvati was born again and again, a hundred and eight times, before Lord Shiva accepted her. Her patience is what the day honours, and why women who pray for a good marriage keep it.

The swings of the rains

Teej comes with the monsoon, and the swing is its sign. Women swing under the trees, and in Braj the gods swing too: in the temples of Vrindavan, Lord Krishna and Goddess Radha are set on swings and dressed in green.

Keeping Hariyali Teej

Hariyali Teej is a festival more than a strict vrat. Many women fast, married women for their husbands and unmarried girls for a good husband, and some take no water at all; others do not fast. Follow your own tradition.

  1. The day before, on Sinjara, put mehndi on your hands.
  2. On the day, bathe and dress in green, with green bangles.
  3. Set a picture or images of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati, and worship Parvati as Teej Mata with flowers, a lamp and the suhaag items.
  4. Sing the songs of Teej, and take turns on a swing hung from a tree or in the courtyard, decked with flowers.
  5. Married daughters receive the sindhara from their parents: clothes, bangles, mehndi and ghevar.
  6. Share ghevar and the other sweets of the day with the family.
