What it remembers

Janmashtami is the eighth day of the dark fortnight of Bhadrapada (Shravana where months end at the full moon), the night Krishna was born in a prison cell at Mathura, at midnight, under the Rohini star. Devotees fast through the day, sing and keep watch, and at midnight the cradle is rocked, the conch is blown, and the fast is broken.

The birth in the prison

The tyrant Kamsa was told that the eighth child of his sister Devaki would kill him, so he imprisoned her and her husband Vasudeva and killed each child at birth. The eighth was born at midnight in a storm: the guards fell asleep, the chains fell open, and Vasudeva carried the child out.

Across the Yamuna

Vasudeva set the baby in a basket on his head and crossed the flooded Yamuna in the dark rain. The river rose to touch the child’s feet and parted, and the serpent Shesha spread his hoods over them like an umbrella. At Gokul he left the baby with Yashoda and Nanda and carried back their newborn daughter.

The butter thief

The child grew up in Gokul and Vrindavan as Makhan Chor, the butter thief, raiding the pots of butter the gopis hung from the ceiling, climbing on his friends’ shoulders to reach them. Dahi Handi, the next day, re-enacts it with human pyramids reaching for a pot of curd hung high over the street.

The universe in his mouth

When the little Krishna was accused of eating mud, Yashoda made him open his mouth, and saw in it the whole universe: the earth, the stars and herself. Then she forgot, and held him as her son again. The story is told as the heart of the day: God born as a child, loved without knowing.

Keeping the night

The fast, the bhajans and the midnight birth are the heart of it. Families and temples keep it in many ways; follow your own tradition where it differs.

  1. Fast through the day: on fruit and milk, or without grain, or without water for the strict. Many eat only after the midnight puja.
  2. Clean and decorate the home and the shrine with flowers, and set up a jhula, a cradle, for the baby Krishna (Laddu Gopal). Some draw small footprints from the door to the shrine.
  3. Through the evening, sing bhajans and kirtans, read the tenth book of the Bhagavata, or the story of the birth, and keep awake.
  4. At midnight, in Nishita Kaal, bathe the image with panchamrit (milk, curd, ghee, honey and sugar) and water, dress it in new clothes and a peacock feather, and place it in the cradle.
  5. Rock the cradle, blow the conch, ring the bells, and sing “Nand ke anand bhayo, jai Kanhaiya lal ki”.
  6. Offer makhan-mishri (butter and sugar), panjiri, panchamrit, fruit and the 56 dishes (chhappan bhog) if your family keeps them, and do the aarti.
  7. Break the fast with the prasad after the puja, or the next day after Ashtami and Rohini end, as your tradition keeps it.

  • New clothes, a peacock feather and flowers for the image
