What it remembers

Ram Navami is the ninth day of the bright fortnight of Chaitra, the last day of Chaitra Navratri, and the birthday of Rama, the prince of Ayodhya and the seventh avatar of Vishnu. He is said to have been born at midday, when the sun stood overhead, so the puja is kept in the Madhyahna, the middle of the day.

The birth at Ayodhya

King Dasharatha of Ayodhya had no heir and performed the Putrakameshti yajna. From the fire came a vessel of payasam, shared among his three queens, and in time Kaushalya bore Rama, Kaikeyi bore Bharata, and Sumitra the twins Lakshmana and Shatrughna. The Ramayana sets Rama’s birth on the ninth day of Chaitra, at noon, under the Punarvasu star.

The ideal man

Rama is Maryada Purushottama, the one who kept every bound: the son who went into exile to honour his father’s word, the husband who crossed the sea for Sita, the king who put his people first. The Ramayana is read on this day as the story of how to live.

Tulsidas and the Ramcharitmanas

Tradition says Tulsidas began the Ramcharitmanas, the Awadhi Ramayana sung across the north, in Ayodhya on Ram Navami in 1574. Its verses, and the Hanuman Chalisa he also wrote, fill the temples on this day.

Hanuman at the birth

Wherever Rama’s story is told, Hanuman is said to be present. In temples the Sundarakanda, the book of Hanuman’s leap to Lanka, is often read on Ram Navami, and the Hanuman Chalisa follows the Rama aarti.

The midday puja

A simple Rama puja at home, with the birth marked at midday. Families keep it in many ways; follow your own tradition where it differs.

  1. Fast from the morning: on fruit and milk, or a full fast until the midday puja, as your family keeps it.
  2. Set an image or idol of Rama with Sita, Lakshmana and Hanuman on a clean cloth, and a small cradle if you have one.
  3. Read or listen to the Ramayana through the morning: the Balakanda for the birth, or the Sundarakanda.
  4. At midday, the birth moment, bathe the image, dress it in new cloth, and place the infant Rama in the cradle. In many homes a coconut wrapped in cloth stands for the child.
  5. Offer flowers, tulsi leaves, fruit, and panakam (jaggery water with ginger and cardamom), neer mor (spiced buttermilk) and kosambari (a soaked-lentil salad) in the southern way.
  6. Sing the Rama aarti and the Hanuman Chalisa, and chant Shri Ram Jai Ram Jai Jai Ram.
  7. Break the fast after the puja, and share the prasad.
