Darvi, in her right hand
Ladle
In her images she holds a ladle in her right hand, of gold set with jewels in the old descriptions. With it she serves food to all who come to her, and it is the sign most often seen with her, beside her vessel.
About Annapurna →Full of food, in her left hand
Vessel
Her other hand holds a vessel of food. Her name, Goddess Annapurna, means full of food, and her verse calls her sadapurne, ever full: the vessel is said never to run empty, however many she feeds.
Held out to her in Kashi
Alms bowl
When food had gone from the world, the story goes, Lord Shiva came to her door in Kashi as a beggar and held out his bowl. She filled it with her own hands, and many of her images show him standing before her with it.
Anna, food and grain
Rice
Anna is food, and grain above all, so every meal is held to be her gift and food is not to be wasted. At Annakut her temple in Kashi is heaped with dishes offered to her, which are then shared out.
Her place in every kitchen
Hearth
She is honoured where food is cooked and eaten. On Annapurna Jayanti families clean the kitchen, worship her and give food away, and before a meal many say her verse, so that the food is first an offering to her.
Her temple, beside Vishwanath
Kashi
In Kashi, Varanasi, she is the queen of the city beside Vishwanath, its king. Her temple stands a few steps from Kashi Vishwanath, built by the Peshwa Baji Rao in the 1720s, and keeps a gold image of her shown only a few days a year.
Kashi on the Ganga, with the spire of her temple beside Vishwanath’s, drawn as a picture rather than a plan. Tap a sign, or its name, to read what it holds. Her ladle is lit first. The ladle and the vessel are what she holds in her images; the alms bowl, rice, the hearth and Kashi come from her story and her worship.
