What it remembers
Gangaur is the great festival of Gauri in Rajasthan. From the day after Holi, women and girls worship clay images of Gauri and of Isar, as Lord Shiva is called here, for sixteen or eighteen days, by different counts. It ends on the third day of the bright half of Chaitra, when the images are dressed, carried in procession and given to the water. The name joins Gan, for Shiva, and Gaur, for Gauri.
Keeping Gangaur
The worship runs from the day after Holi to the bright Tritiya of Chaitra, at home or with the women of the lane. Many women eat only one meal a day until it ends. Families keep it in many ways; follow your own tradition where it differs.
- The day after Holi, gather a little ash from the Holika fire, sow wheat and barley in it in earthen pots, and water them each day.
- Make, or bring home, images of Gauri and Isar of clay or wood, and dress them.
- Each morning, worship them with water, flowers and doob grass, singing the Gangaur songs.
- Put mehendi on your hands and feet through the days of the festival.
- From the seventh evening, girls carry the ghudlia, an earthen pot full of holes with a lamp inside, round the neighbourhood, singing for small gifts of sweets, jaggery and ghee.
- On the last days, dress the images in new clothes and carry them on your head to a lake, well or garden, singing the songs of farewell.
- Offer water, and give the images to the water on the last day. Share ghevar and sweets.
