Durga Chalisa

नमो नमो दुर्गे सुख करनी।
नमो नमो अम्बे दुःख हरनी॥

Namo namo Durge sukh karani,
Namo namo Ambe dukh harani.

I bow again and again to you, Durga, who bring happiness; I bow again and again to you, Amba, who take sorrow away.

सुख देने वाली दुर्गा माँ, आपको बार-बार प्रणाम है; दुख दूर करने वाली अम्बा माँ, आपको बार-बार प्रणाम है।

निरंकार है ज्योति तुम्हारी।
तिहूँ लोक फैली उजियारी॥

Nirankar hai jyoti tumhari,
Tihun lok phaili ujiyari.

Your light has no form, and its brightness fills all three worlds.

आपकी ज्योति का कोई आकार नहीं है, और उसका उजाला तीनों लोकों में फैला है।

शशि ललाट मुख महाविशाला।
नेत्र लाल भृकुटि विकराला॥

Shashi lalat mukh mahavishala,
Netra lal bhrikuti vikrala.

The moon is on your forehead and your face is vast; your eyes are red and your brows are fearsome.

आपके माथे पर चंद्रमा है और आपका मुख बहुत विशाल है; आपकी आँखें लाल हैं और भौंहें भयानक हैं।

रूप मातु को अधिक सुहावे।
दरश करत जन अति सुख पावे॥

Roop matu ko adhik suhave,
Daras karat jan ati sukh pave.

The Mother’s form is beautiful beyond measure, and those who see her are filled with joy.

माँ का रूप बहुत ही सुंदर है, और जो उनके दर्शन करता है, वह आनंद से भर जाता है।

तुम संसार शक्ति लै कीना।
पालन हेतु अन्न धन दीना॥

Tum sansar shakti lai kina,
Palan hetu ann dhan dina.

You gathered the power that made the world, and to keep it alive you gave it food and wealth.

आपने शक्ति जुटाकर संसार को रचा, और उसे पालने के लिए अन्न और धन दिया।

अन्नपूर्णा हुई जग पाला।
तुम ही आदि सुन्दरी बाला॥

Annapurna hui jag pala,
Tum hi adi sundari bala.

As Annapurna, giver of food, you feed the whole world; you are the first and ever-young beauty.

अन्नपूर्णा बनकर आप सारे जगत को भोजन देती हैं; आप ही सबसे पहली और सदा युवा रहने वाली सुंदरी हैं।

प्रलयकाल सब नाशन हारी।
तुम गौरी शिवशंकर प्यारी॥

Pralaykal sab nashan hari,
Tum Gauri Shivshankar pyari.

When the world dissolves at the end of time, you are the one who ends all things; and you are Gauri, beloved of Shiva.

प्रलय के समय, जब संसार का अंत होता है, आप ही सबका नाश करती हैं; और आप ही शिव जी की प्यारी गौरी हैं।

शिव योगी तुम्हरे गुण गावें।
ब्रह्मा विष्णु तुम्हें नित ध्यावें॥

Shiv yogi tumhre gun gaven,
Brahma Vishnu tumhen nit dhyaven.

Shiva the great yogi sings your virtues, and Brahma and Vishnu meditate on you every day.

महायोगी शिव आपके गुण गाते हैं, और ब्रह्मा तथा विष्णु रोज़ आपका ध्यान करते हैं।

रूप सरस्वती को तुम धारा।
दे सुबुद्धि ऋषि मुनिन उबारा॥

Roop Saraswati ko tum dhara,
De subuddhi rishi munin ubara.

You took the form of Saraswati and saved the seers and sages by giving them a clear mind.

आपने सरस्वती का रूप लिया और ऋषि-मुनियों को अच्छी बुद्धि देकर उनका उद्धार किया।

धरयो रूप नरसिंह को अम्बा।
प्रगट भई फाड़कर खम्बा॥

Dharyo roop Narsimha ko Amba,
Pragat bhai phad kar khamba.

Mother Amba, you took the form of Narasimha, the man-lion, and burst out of the pillar.

हे अम्बा माँ, आपने आधे मनुष्य और आधे सिंह, नरसिंह का रूप लिया और खंभा फाड़कर प्रकट हुईं।

रक्षा करि प्रह्लाद बचायो।
हिरणाकुश को स्वर्ग पठायो॥

Raksha kari Prahlad bachayo,
Hiranyakush ko swarg pathayo.

You protected Prahlada and saved him, and sent the demon king Hiranyakashipu to the next world.

आपने प्रह्लाद की रक्षा करके उसे बचाया, और राक्षस राजा हिरण्यकशिपु को परलोक भेज दिया।

लक्ष्मी रूप धरो जग माहीं।
श्री नारायण अंग समाहीं॥

Lakshmi roop dharo jag mahin,
Shri Narayan ang samahin.

You took the form of Lakshmi in the world and became one with Narayana, Vishnu himself.

आपने संसार में लक्ष्मी का रूप लिया और स्वयं भगवान नारायण, यानी विष्णु, के साथ एक हो गईं।

क्षीरसिन्धु में करत विलासा।
दयासिन्धु दीजै मन आसा॥

Ksheersindhu mein karat vilasa,
Dayasindhu dije man aasa.

You take your delight in the ocean of milk; ocean of mercy, fulfil the hopes of my heart.

आप क्षीरसागर में आनंद से रहती हैं; हे दया की सागर, मेरे मन की आशा पूरी कीजिए।

हिंगलाज में तुम्हीं भवानी।
महिमा अमित न जात बखानी॥

Hinglaj mein tumhi Bhavani,
Mahima amit na jaat bakhani.

At Hinglaj you are Bhavani; your greatness has no limit and cannot be told in words.

हिंगलाज में आप ही भवानी हैं; आपकी महिमा की कोई सीमा नहीं, उसे शब्दों में कहा नहीं जा सकता।

मातंगी अरु धूमावति माता।
भुवनेश्वरी बगला सुख दाता॥

Matangi aru Dhumavati mata,
Bhuvaneshwari Bagala sukh data.

You are Mother Matangi and Dhumavati, and Bhuvaneshwari and Bagala, who give happiness.

आप ही माता मातंगी और धूमावती हैं, और आप ही सुख देने वाली भुवनेश्वरी और बगला हैं।

श्री भैरव तारा जग तारिणी।
छिन्न भाल भव दुःख निवारिणी॥

Shri Bhairav Tara jag tarini,
Chhinna bhal bhav dukh nivarini.

You are Bhairavi, and Tara who carries the world across; as Chhinnamasta, with your own head cut off, you end the pain of worldly life.

आप भैरवी हैं, और संसार को पार लगाने वाली तारा हैं; छिन्नमस्ता बनकर, अपना ही सिर काटकर, आप सांसारिक जीवन का दुख मिटाती हैं।

केहरि वाहन सोह भवानी।
लांगुर वीर चलत अगवानी॥

Kehari vahan soh Bhavani,
Langur veer chalat agvani.

Bhavani, you look magnificent riding your lion, and the brave Langur, Hanuman, walks ahead of you.

हे भवानी, सिंह पर सवार होकर आप बहुत शोभा पाती हैं, और वीर लांगुर, यानी हनुमान जी, आपके आगे-आगे चलते हैं।

कर में खप्पर खड्ग विराजै।
जाको देख काल डर भाजै॥

Kar mein khappar khadag viraje,
Jako dekh kaal dar bhaje.

A skull bowl and a sword shine in your hands; at the sight of them even Death runs away in fear.

आपके हाथों में खप्पर और तलवार चमकते हैं; उन्हें देखकर मृत्यु भी डरकर भाग जाती है।

सोहै अस्त्र और त्रिशूला।
जाते उठत शत्रु हिय शूला॥

Sohe astra aur trishula,
Jate uthat shatru hiya shula.

Your weapons and your trident gleam, and they strike a stabbing pain into the hearts of your enemies.

आपके अस्त्र और त्रिशूल चमकते हैं, जिनसे शत्रुओं के हृदय में चुभने वाली पीड़ा उठती है।

नगरकोट में तुम्हीं विराजत।
तिहुँ लोक में डंका बाजत॥

Nagarkot mein tumhi virajat,
Tihun lok mein danka bajat.

You are enthroned at Nagarkot, and the drum of your fame sounds through all three worlds.

नगरकोट में आप ही विराजमान हैं, और आपकी कीर्ति का डंका तीनों लोकों में बजता है।

शुम्भ निशुम्भ दानव तुम मारे।
रक्तबीज शंखन संहारे॥

Shumbh Nishumbh danav tum mare,
Raktabeej shankhan sanhare.

You killed the demons Shumbha and Nishumbha, and destroyed Raktabija and his countless copies.

आपने शुम्भ और निशुम्भ राक्षसों को मारा, और रक्तबीज तथा उसके अनगिनत रूपों का नाश किया।

महिषासुर नृप अति अभिमानी।
जेहि अघ भार मही अकुलानी॥

Mahishasur nrip ati abhimani,
Jehi agh bhar mahi akulani.

Mahishasura, the demon king, was full of pride, and the earth groaned under the weight of his sins.

राक्षसों का राजा महिषासुर बहुत घमंडी था, और उसके पापों के बोझ से धरती व्याकुल हो उठी थी।

रूप कराल कालिका धारा।
सेन सहित तुम तिहि संहारा॥

Roop karal Kalika dhara,
Sen sahit tum tihi sanhara.

You took the terrible form of Kali and destroyed him together with his whole army.

आपने काली का भयानक रूप लिया और उसे उसकी पूरी सेना सहित नष्ट कर दिया।

परी गाढ़ सन्तन पर जब जब।
भई सहाय मातु तुम तब तब॥

Pari gaadh santan par jab jab,
Bhai sahay matu tum tab tab.

Whenever hard times have fallen on good people, Mother, you have come to help them every time.

जब-जब सज्जनों पर कठिन समय आया है, हे माँ, तब-तब आपने आकर उनकी सहायता की है।

अमरपुरी अरु बासव लोका।
तब महिमा सब रहें अशोका॥

Amarpuri aru basav loka,
Tab mahima sab rahen ashoka.

In the city of the immortals and in Indra’s heaven, everyone lives free of sorrow by your greatness.

देवताओं की नगरी में और इंद्र के लोक में, आपकी महिमा से सब लोग बिना शोक के रहते हैं।

ज्वाला में है ज्योति तुम्हारी।
तुम्हें सदा पूजें नर-नारी॥

Jwala mein hai jyoti tumhari,
Tumhen sada pujen nar nari.

Your light burns in the flame at Jwalamukhi, where men and women worship you always.

ज्वालामुखी की लौ में आपकी ही ज्योति जलती है, जहाँ स्त्री-पुरुष सदा आपकी पूजा करते हैं।

प्रेम भक्ति से जो यश गावें।
दुःख दारिद्र निकट नहिं आवें॥

Prem bhakti se jo yash gave,
Dukh daridra nikat nahin aave.

Sorrow and poverty do not come near anyone who sings your glory with love and devotion.

जो प्रेम और भक्ति से आपका यश गाता है, दुख और गरीबी उसके पास नहीं आते।

ध्यावे तुम्हें जो नर मन लाई।
जन्म-मरण ताकौ छुटि जाई॥

Dhyave tumhen jo nar man lai,
Janam maran tako chhuti jai.

Whoever meditates on you with their whole mind is set free from the round of birth and death.

जो पूरे मन से आपका ध्यान करता है, वह जन्म और मृत्यु के चक्र से छूट जाता है।

जोगी सुर मुनि कहत पुकारी।
योग न हो बिन शक्ति तुम्हारी॥

Jogi sur muni kahat pukari,
Yog na ho bin shakti tumhari.

Yogis, gods and sages all proclaim it aloud: without your power, no yoga can succeed.

योगी, देवता और मुनि सब पुकारकर कहते हैं कि आपकी शक्ति के बिना कोई योग सफल नहीं होता।

शंकर आचारज तप कीनो।
काम अरु क्रोध जीति सब लीनो॥

Shankar Acharaj tap kino,
Kaam aru krodh jeeti sab lino.

Shankaracharya kept a hard penance and won complete victory over desire and anger.

शंकराचार्य ने कठोर तप किया और इच्छा तथा क्रोध पर पूरी जीत पा ली।

निशिदिन ध्यान धरो शंकर को।
काहु काल नहिं सुमिरो तुमको॥

Nishidin dhyan dharo Shankar ko,
Kahu kaal nahin sumiro tumko.

Day and night he meditated on Shankar, Shiva, but never once did he remember you.

वे दिन-रात भगवान शंकर का ध्यान करते रहे, पर उन्होंने एक बार भी आपको याद नहीं किया।

शक्ति रूप को मरम न पायो।
शक्ति गई तब मन पछितायो॥

Shakti roop ko maram na payo,
Shakti gai tab man pachhitayo.

He did not understand the secret of your form as Shakti; when his strength left him, he was sorry at heart.

वे आपके शक्ति रूप का रहस्य नहीं समझ पाए; जब उनकी शक्ति चली गई, तब उन्हें मन में पछतावा हुआ।

शरणागत हुई कीर्ति बखानी।
जय जय जय जगदम्ब भवानी॥

Sharanagat hui kirti bakhani,
Jai jai jai Jagadamb Bhavani.

He came to you for refuge and sang your praise: glory, glory, glory to Bhavani, Mother of the world.

तब वे आपकी शरण में आए और आपकी कीर्ति गाई: जगत की माता भवानी की जय हो, जय हो, जय हो।

भई प्रसन्न आदि जगदम्बा।
दई शक्ति नहिं कीन विलम्बा॥

Bhai prasanna Adi Jagadamba,
Dai shakti nahin kin vilamba.

The first Mother of the world was pleased, and gave him back his strength without delay.

जगत की आदि माता प्रसन्न हुईं और बिना देर किए उन्हें उनकी शक्ति लौटा दी।

मोको मातु कष्ट अति घेरो।
तुम बिन कौन हरै दुःख मेरो॥

Moko matu kasht ati ghero,
Tum bin kaun hare dukh mero.

Mother, great troubles surround me; who but you can take my sorrow away?

हे माँ, मुझे बड़े-बड़े कष्टों ने घेर रखा है; आपके सिवा मेरा दुख और कौन दूर कर सकता है?

आशा तृष्णा निपट सतावें।
रिपु मूरख मोहि अति डरपावे॥

Asha trishna nipat satavein,
Ripu murakh mohi ati darpave.

Hope and craving torment me without end, and foolish enemies frighten me badly.

आशा और लालसा मुझे लगातार सताती हैं, और मूर्ख शत्रु मुझे बहुत डराते हैं।

शत्रु नाश कीजै महारानी।
सुमिरौं इकचित तुम्हें भवानी॥

Shatru nash kije Maharani,
Sumiron ikchit tumhen Bhavani.

Great Queen, destroy my enemies; Bhavani, I remember you with a single-minded heart.

हे महारानी, मेरे शत्रुओं का नाश कीजिए; हे भवानी, मैं एक मन से आपको याद करता हूँ।

करो कृपा हे मातु दयाला।
ऋद्धि-सिद्धि दै करहु निहाला॥

Karo kripa he matu dayala,
Riddhi siddhi dai karahu nihala.

Be gracious, kind Mother; bless me with plenty and success and make me whole.

हे दयालु माँ, कृपा कीजिए; मुझे सुख-समृद्धि और सफलता देकर निहाल कर दीजिए।

जब लगि जिऊँ दया फल पाऊँ।
तुम्हरो यश मैं सदा सुनाऊँ॥

Jab lagi jiyun daya phal paun,
Tumharo yash main sada sunaun.

As long as I live, may I receive the fruit of your kindness, and may I always tell of your glory.

जब तक मैं जीवित रहूँ, आपकी दया का फल पाता रहूँ, और सदा आपका यश सुनाता रहूँ।

श्री दुर्गा चालीसा जो कोई गावै।
सब सुख भोग परमपद पावै॥

Shri Durga Chalisa jo koi gave,
Sab sukh bhog parampad pave.

Whoever sings this Durga Chalisa enjoys every happiness in this life and reaches the highest state.

जो कोई यह दुर्गा चालीसा गाता है, वह इस जीवन में हर सुख भोगता है और परम पद पाता है।

देवीदास शरण निज जानी।
करहु कृपा जगदम्ब भवानी॥

Devidas sharan nij jani,
Karahu kripa Jagadamb Bhavani.

Knowing you as his refuge, Devidas prays: Bhavani, Mother of the world, have mercy on me.

आपको ही अपनी शरण मानकर देवीदास विनती करते हैं: हे जगत की माता भवानी, मुझ पर कृपा कीजिए।
