Refrain

  1. Refrain

    Aarti Kunj Bihari ki,
    Shri Girdhar Krishna Murari ki.

Let us wave the lamp for Krishna, who plays in the groves of Vrindavan; for Shri Krishna, Murari, who held up the hill of Govardhan!

The four verses

  1. Verse 1

Gale mein baijanti mala, bajave murli madhur bala,
Shravan mein kundal jhalkala, Nand ke anand Nandlala,
Gagan sam ang kanti kali, Radhika chamak rahi aali,
    Latan mein thadhe Banmali,
Bhramar si alak, kasturi tilak, chandra si jhalak,
Lalit chhavi Shyama pyari ki, Shri Girdhar Krishna Murari ki.

A Vaijayanti garland hangs at his neck, and the boy plays sweet music on his flute. Earrings sparkle in his ears: he is Nanda’s darling, the joy of Nanda’s home. His body is dark as the night sky, and Radha shines beside him as his companion. Wearing a garland of forest flowers he stands among the creepers, his curls dark as bees, a mark of musk on his brow and a glow like the moon: how lovely is the sight of Shyama and his beloved.

Then the refrain: Aarti Kunj Bihari ki…

  2. Verse 2

Kanakmay mor mukut bilse, devta darsan ko tarse,
    Gagan son suman rasi barse,
Baje murchang, madhur mirdang, gwalin sang,
Atul rati gop kumari ki, Shri Girdhar Krishna Murari ki.

A golden crown with peacock feathers shines on his head, and the gods long for a sight of him. Flowers rain down from the sky in heaps; the murchang and the sweet mridang drum play, and the cowherd girls are with him, the gopis whose love for him has no equal.

Then the refrain: Aarti Kunj Bihari ki…

  3. Verse 3

Jahan te prakat bhai Ganga, sakal man harini Shri Ganga,
    Smaran te hot moh bhanga,
Basi Shiv sees, jata ke beech, hare agh keech,
Charan chhavi Shri Banwari ki, Shri Girdhar Krishna Murari ki.

From his feet the Ganga came forth, the holy river who wins every heart; simply to remember her breaks the spell of delusion. She came to rest on Shiva’s head, among his matted locks, and she washes away the mud of wrongdoing. Such is the beauty of the feet of Krishna, who roams the woods.

Then the refrain: Aarti Kunj Bihari ki…

  4. Verse 4

Chamakti ujjwal tat renu, baj rahi Vrindavan benu,
    Chahun disi gopi gwal dhenu,
Hansat mridu mand, chandni chand, katat bhav phand,

The bright sand of the riverbank glitters and his flute sounds through Vrindavan, with gopis, cowherds and cows all around him. He smiles a soft, gentle smile, like the light of the moon, and the snares of worldly life fall away. Hear the cry of this poor, suffering soul!

Then the refrain: Aarti Kunj Bihari ki…
