Ganesha is worshipped first, so at Diwali this aarti comes before Om Jai Lakshmi Mata. Sing the refrain first and again after every verse.

    माता जाकी पार्वती, पिता महादेवा॥

    Jai Ganesh, Jai Ganesh, Jai Ganesh Deva,
    Mata jaki Parvati, pita Mahadeva.

    Glory to Lord Ganesha, whose mother is Parvati and whose father is Mahadeva, the great god Shiva.

    भगवान गणेश की जय हो, जिनकी माता पार्वती हैं और पिता महादेव, यानी महान देवता शिव।

    एक दंत दयावंत, चार भुजा धारी।
    माथे सिंदूर सोहे, मूसे की सवारी॥

    Ek dant dayavant, char bhuja dhari,
    Mathe sindoor sohe, muse ki savari.

    You have one tusk and a heart full of compassion, and four arms. Vermilion shines on your forehead, and you ride a mouse.

    आपका एक दाँत है, मन दया से भरा है और चार भुजाएँ हैं। आपके माथे पर सिंदूर चमकता है और आप चूहे की सवारी करते हैं।

    पान चढ़े फूल चढ़े, और चढ़े मेवा।
    लड्डुअन का भोग लगे, संत करें सेवा॥

    Paan chadhe phool chadhe, aur chadhe meva,
    Ladduan ka bhog lage, sant karen seva.

    Betel leaves, flowers and dried fruit are offered to you, with laddus as your food, while the saints serve you.

    आपको पान, फूल और मेवे चढ़ाए जाते हैं, लड्डुओं का भोग लगता है, और संत आपकी सेवा करते हैं।

    अंधन को आंख देत, कोढ़िन को काया।
    बांझन को पुत्र देत, निर्धन को माया॥

    Andhan ko aankh det, kodhin ko kaya,
    Banjhan ko putra det, nirdhan ko maya.

    You give sight to the blind and health to the sick, a child to those who long for one and wealth to the poor.

    आप अंधों को आँखें और रोगियों को स्वस्थ शरीर देते हैं। जो संतान के लिए तरसते हैं उन्हें संतान, और गरीबों को धन देते हैं।

    सूर श्याम शरण आए, सफल कीजे सेवा।
    माता जाकी पार्वती, पिता महादेवा॥

    Soor Shyam sharan aaye, safal kije seva,
    Mata jaki Parvati, pita Mahadeva.

    Surdas, devotee of Krishna, has come to you for shelter: make his service bear fruit, you whose mother is Parvati and whose father is Mahadeva.

    श्रीकृष्ण के भक्त सूरदास आपकी शरण में आए हैं। हे गणेश, जिनकी माता पार्वती और पिता महादेव हैं, उनकी सेवा को सफल कीजिए।

    दीनन की लाज रखो, शंभु सुतकारी।
    कामना को पूर्ण करो, जाऊं बलिहारी॥

    Deenan ki laaj rakho, Shambhu sutkari,
    Kamana ko poorn karo, jaun balihari.

    Son of Shambhu (Shiva), protect the honour of the humble. Fulfil our heartfelt wishes; I give myself to you.

    हे शंभु यानी शिव जी के पुत्र, दीन-दुखियों की लाज रखिए। हमारे मन की इच्छाएँ पूरी कीजिए; मैं अपने आप को आप पर न्योछावर करता हूँ।

How to sing it

  • When · At the start of any puja, at Diwali before the Lakshmi aarti, on Wednesdays and through Ganesh Chaturthi.
  • How · Wave a lit diya in slow clockwise circles before Ganesha while everyone sings. A modak or laddu is his favourite offering.
  • Words · Some families sing "Mathe tilak sohe" in the first verse instead of "Mathe sindoor sohe". Both are traditional.
