Dhyana, the meditation on Rama

  1. Dhyana

Dhyayed ajanubahum dhrita shara dhanusham baddha padmasanastham,
Pitam vaso vasanam nava kamala dala spardhi netram prasannam,
Vamankarudha Sita mukha kamala milal lochanam niradabham,
Nanalankara diptam dadhatam uru jata mandanam Ramachandram.

Picture Ramachandra: his arms reach down to his knees, he holds his bow and arrows, and he sits firm in the lotus pose, dressed in yellow, his eyes lovelier than fresh lotus petals, his face calm and glad. Sita sits on his left knee and his eyes meet her lotus face. He is dark as a rain cloud, shining with many ornaments, and his long matted hair is his crown.

Verses 1 to 3: remembering Rama

  1. Verse 1

    Charitam Raghunathasya shatakoti pravistaram,
    Ekaikam aksharam pumsam mahapataka nashanam.

The story of Rama, lord of the Raghus, runs to a hundred crore verses, and every single syllable of it wipes away even the gravest wrongs of those who take it in.

  2. Verse 2

Dhyatva nilotpala shyamam Ramam rajiva lochanam,
    Janaki Lakshmanopetam jata mukuta manditam.

    First picture Rama in your mind: dark as the blue lotus, with eyes like lotus petals, Janaki (Sita) and Lakshmana at his side, his matted hair piled high like a crown;

    नील कमल जैसे साँवले, कमल जैसे नेत्रों वाले, जानकी और लक्ष्मण के साथ, जटाओं के मुकुट से सजे श्रीराम का पहले मन में ध्यान करें;

Svalilaya jagat tratum avirbhutam ajam vibhum.

with sword and quiver, bow and arrows in his hands, the end of the demons who roam by night; the unborn Lord, present everywhere, who came into the world in his own play to protect it.

Etam Ramabalopetam raksham yah sukriti pathet,
Sa chirayuh sukhi putri vijayi vinayi bhavet.

The good soul who recites this protection, filled with Rama’s strength, will live long and happily, be blessed with children, and be both victorious and humble.

  2. Verse 11

Na drashtum api shaktaste rakshitam Rama namabhih.

Beings that roam the underworld, the earth or the sky, and those that go about in disguise, cannot even look at someone guarded by the names of Rama.

    Rameti Ramabhadreti Ramachandreti va smaran,

Yah kanthe dharayet tasya karasthah sarva siddhayah.

Rama’s name is the one mantra that conquers the world. Whoever wears this hymn, guarded by that name, at their throat holds every accomplishment in the palm of their hand.

Whoever keeps in mind this armour of Rama, called the Vajrapanjara, the cage of diamond, is obeyed wherever they go and wins victory and good fortune.

Tatha likhitavan pratah prabuddho Budha Kaushikah.

Shiva gave this Ram Raksha in a dream, and Budha Kaushika, waking in the morning, wrote it down just as he had been told.

    Manojavam maruta tulya vegam,
    Jitendriyam buddhimatam varishtham,
    Vatatmajam vanara yutha mukhyam,
    Shri Ramadutam sharanam prapadye.

Swift as thought and fast as the wind, master of his senses, the wisest of the wise, son of the Wind and chief of the vanara army: in Hanuman, Shri Rama’s messenger, I take refuge.

  10. Verse 34

    Kujantam Rama Rameti madhuram madhuraksharam,
Aruhya kavita shakham vande Valmiki kokilam.

I bow to Valmiki, the cuckoo who sits on the branch of poetry and sings “Rama, Rama” in sweet, sweet syllables.

  11. Verse 35

    Apadam apahartaram dataram sarva sampadam,
Lokabhiramam Shri Ramam bhuyo bhuyo namamyaham.

Again and again I bow to Shri Rama, the delight of the world, who takes away every hardship and gives every kind of wealth.

  12. Verse 36

Bharjanam bhava bijanam arjanam sukha sampadam,
    Tarjanam yamadutanam Rama Rameti garjanam.

The roar of “Rama, Rama” roasts the seeds of rebirth so they can never sprout, wins happiness and plenty, and frightens off the messengers of Yama, the lord of death.

  13. Verse 37

Ramo rajamanih sada vijayate Ramam Ramesham bhaje,
Ramenabhihata nishachara chamu Ramaya tasmai namah,
    Ramannasti parayanam parataram Ramasya dasosmyaham,
Rame chittalayah sada bhavatu me bho Rama mam uddhara.

Rama, jewel among kings, is victorious for ever; I worship Rama, lord of Lakshmi. By Rama the armies of the night-roaming demons were struck down; to that Rama I bow. There is no refuge higher than Rama; I am Rama’s servant. May my mind always rest in Rama. O Rama, lift me up. (The verse names Rama in each of the eight cases of Sanskrit grammar.)

  14. Verse 38

Shri Rama Rama Rameti Rame Rame manorame,
    Sahasranama tattulyam Ramanama varanane.

Shiva says to Parvati: lovely one, saying “Shri Rama, Rama, Rama”, I delight in Rama, who delights the heart. O fair-faced one, the one name of Rama is equal to the thousand names of Vishnu.
