Saraswati Vandana
The prayer to Saraswati sung in schools across India, “Ya kundendu”, with the verse that follows it and the short verse said before study. In English letters, with the meaning of every verse.
Say the two verses with folded hands before study, music or any new learning. Many then add the short verse Saraswati namastubhyam before opening a book.
The two verses of the Vandana
- Verse 1
Ya kundendu tushara hara dhavala, ya shubhra vastravrita,
Ya veena vara danda mandita kara, ya shveta padmasana,
Ya Brahmachyuta Shankara prabhritibhir devaih sada vandita,
Sa mam patu Saraswati Bhagavati nihshesha jadyapaha. She who is white as jasmine, the moon, snow and a string of pearls, who is dressed in pure white, whose hands hold the fine veena, who sits on a white lotus, whom Brahma, Vishnu, Shiva and all the gods always worship: may that Saraswati, the blessed goddess who takes away all dullness of mind, protect me.
Shuklam Brahmavichara sara paramam adyam jagadvyapinim,
Veena pustaka dharinim abhayadam jadyandhakarapaham,
Haste sphatika malikam vidadhatim padmasane samsthitam,
Vande tam Parameshvarim Bhagavatim buddhipradam Sharadam.I bow to Sharada, the supreme goddess, the blessed one who gives understanding: shining white, the highest essence of all thought on Brahman, the first of all, filling the whole world; holding the veena and the book, granting fearlessness and driving away the darkness of a dull mind; holding a crystal rosary in her hand and seated on a lotus.
The verse many add before study

Vidyarambham karishyami siddhir bhavatu me sada.Saraswati, I bow to you, giver of blessings, who takes whatever form you wish. I am about to begin my studies: may I always succeed in them.
