Siddha Kunjika Stotram

The key to the Durga Saptashati that Lord Shiva taught Goddess Parvati, from the Gauri Tantra of the Rudrayamala: its mantra and seed syllables in Devanagari and English letters, with the meaning of every verse.

15 verses, with the mantraAbout 4 min to recite

The hymn says of itself that reading it alone brings the fruit of a full reading of the Durga Saptashati, with no need of the Kavach, Argala or Kilak (verses 2 and 3), and that the Saptashati recited without it bears no fruit (verse 15). Its bija mantras, the seed syllables, are sound-forms of the Goddess: they are given as they are written and are not translated word by word. One line that a single source adds to verse 13 is held back until its reading is settled. Reciting from memory? Hide the meaning.

Verses 1 to 4: Shiva tells Parvati of the key

  1. Verse 1

    शृणु देवि प्रवक्ष्यामि कुञ्जिकास्तोत्रमुत्तमम् ।
    येन मन्त्रप्रभावेण चण्डीजापः शुभो भवेत् ॥

Shrinu devi pravakshyami kunjika stotram uttamam,
Yena mantra prabhavena chandi japah shubho bhavet.

Shiva said: Listen, Goddess, and I will tell you the Kunjika Stotram, the finest of hymns, by the power of whose mantra the recitation of the Chandi bears fruit.

    शिव जी ने कहा: हे देवी, सुनो, मैं तुम्हें उत्तम कुंजिका स्तोत्र बताता हूँ, जिसके मन्त्र के प्रभाव से चण्डी का पाठ शुभ और सफल होता है।

  2. Verse 2

    न कवचं नार्गलास्तोत्रं कीलकं न रहस्यकम् ।
    न सूक्तं नापि ध्यानं च न न्यासो न च वार्चनम् ॥

Na kavacham nargala stotram kilakam na rahasyakam,
Na suktam napi dhyanam cha na nyaso na cha varchanam.

With it there is no need of the Kavach, the Argala Stotram, the Kilak or the Rahasya; no need of the sukta, the meditation, the nyasa or the ritual worship.

    इसके साथ न कवच चाहिए, न अर्गला स्तोत्र, न कीलक और न रहस्य; न सूक्त, न ध्यान, न न्यास और न ही अर्चना।

  3. Verse 3

    कुञ्जिकापाठमात्रेण दुर्गापाठफलं लभेत् ।
    अति गुह्यतरं देवि देवानामपि दुर्लभम् ॥

Kunjika patha matrena durga patha phalam labhet,
Ati guhyataram devi devanam api durlabham.

By reading the Kunjika alone one gains the fruit of reading the whole Durga path. Goddess, it is a deep secret, hard to come by even for the gods.

    केवल कुंजिका के पाठ से पूरे दुर्गा पाठ का फल मिल जाता है। हे देवी, यह अत्यन्त गुप्त है और देवताओं को भी कठिनाई से मिलता है।

  4. Verse 4

    गोपनीयं प्रयत्नेन स्वयोनिरिव पार्वति ।
    मारणं मोहनं वश्यं स्तम्भनोच्चाटनादिकम् ।
    पाठमात्रेण संसिद्ध्येत् कुञ्जिकास्तोत्रमुत्तमम् ॥

    Gopaniyam prayatnena svayoniriva parvati,
    Maranam mohanam vashyam stambhanochchatanadikam,
Patha matrena samsiddhyet kunjika stotram uttamam.

Parvati, keep it hidden with care, as closely as what is most private to you. The rites the tantras speak of, to strike down, to enchant, to win over, to hold still and to drive away, all succeed by the mere reading of this finest hymn, the Kunjika Stotram.

    हे पार्वती, इसे अपने सबसे निजी रहस्य की तरह यत्न से छिपाकर रखना। तन्त्र में बताए गए मारण, मोहन, वशीकरण, स्तम्भन और उच्चाटन जैसे सब कर्म इस उत्तम कुंजिका स्तोत्र के केवल पाठ से सिद्ध हो जाते हैं।

Verse 5: the mantra

  1. Verse 5

    ॐ ऐं ह्रीं क्लीं चामुण्डायै विच्चे ।
    ॐ ग्लौं हुं क्लीं जूं सः ज्वालय ज्वालय ज्वल ज्वल प्रज्वल प्रज्वल
    ऐं ह्रीं क्लीं चामुण्डायै विच्चे ज्वल हं सं लं क्षं फट् स्वाहा ॥

Om aim hrim klim chamundayai vichche,
Om glaum hum klim jum sah jvalaya jvalaya jvala jvala prajvala prajvala,
Aim hrim klim chamundayai vichche jvala ham sam lam ksham phat svaha.

The mantra. Its seed syllables, aim, hrim, klim, glaum, hum, jum, sah, ham, sam, lam and ksham, are sound-forms of the Goddess, recited as they are and not translated word by word. The words among them mean "to Chamunda" and "make it blaze, make it blaze, burn, burn, flare up, flare up", and it closes with phat and svaha. Verses 8 and 9 tell what the first syllables stand for.

Verses 6 to 13: praise and the seed syllables

  1. Verse 6

    नमस्ते रुद्ररूपिण्यै नमस्ते मधुमर्दिनि ।
    नमः कैटभहारिण्यै नमस्ते महिषार्दिनि ॥

Namaste rudra rupinyai namaste madhu mardini,
    Namah kaitabha harinyai namaste mahishardini.

I bow to you who take the fierce form of Rudra; I bow to you, slayer of Madhu. I bow to you who destroyed Kaitabha; I bow to you, crusher of Mahisha.

    रुद्र का रूप धारण करने वाली, आपको नमस्कार; मधु का संहार करने वाली, आपको नमस्कार। कैटभ का नाश करने वाली को नमस्कार; महिषासुर को कुचलने वाली, आपको नमस्कार।

  2. Verse 7

    नमस्ते शुम्भहन्त्र्यै च निशुम्भासुरघातिनि ।
    जाग्रतं हि महादेवि जपं सिद्धं कुरुष्व मे ॥

Namaste shumbha hantryai cha nishumbhasura ghatini,
Jagratam hi mahadevi japam siddham kurushva me.

I bow to you who killed Shumbha and struck down the demon Nishumbha. Great Goddess, awaken my recitation and make it bear fruit.

    शुम्भ का वध करने वाली और निशुम्भ असुर को मारने वाली, आपको नमस्कार। हे महादेवी, मेरे जप को जाग्रत करो और उसे सिद्ध करो।

  3. Verse 8

    ऐङ्कारी सृष्टिरूपायै ह्रीङ्कारी प्रतिपालिका ।
    क्लीङ्कारी कामरूपिण्यै बीजरूपे नमोऽस्तु ते ॥

    Aimkari srishti rupayai hrimkari pratipalika,
Klimkari kama rupinyai bija rupe namostu te.

As the syllable aim you are the form of creation; as hrim you are the one who protects and sustains; as klim you are the form of desire. You whose form is the seed syllable, I bow to you.

    ऐं के रूप में आप सृष्टि का रूप हैं, ह्रीं के रूप में पालन करने वाली हैं, और क्लीं के रूप में इच्छा का रूप हैं। हे बीज-रूपिणी, आपको नमस्कार।

  4. Verse 9

    चामुण्डा चण्डघाती च यैकारी वरदायिनी ।
    विच्चे चाभयदा नित्यं नमस्ते मन्त्ररूपिणि ॥

Chamunda chanda ghati cha yaikari varadayini,
Vichche chabhayada nityam namaste mantra rupini.

You are Chamunda, slayer of Chanda; as the syllable yai you grant boons; as vichche you always give freedom from fear. You whose form is the mantra, I bow to you.

    आप चामुण्डा हैं, चण्ड का वध करने वाली; "यै" अक्षर के रूप में वर देने वाली, और "विच्चे" के रूप में सदा अभय देने वाली। हे मन्त्र-रूपिणी, आपको नमस्कार।

  5. Verse 10

    धां धीं धूं धूर्जटेः पत्नी वां वीं वूं वागधीश्वरी ।
    क्रां क्रीं क्रूं कालिका देवि शां शीं शूं मे शुभं कुरु ॥

Dham dhim dhum dhurjateh patni vam vim vum vagadhishvari,
Kram krim krum kalika devi sham shim shum me shubham kuru.

Dham dhim dhum: you are the wife of Dhurjati, Shiva of the matted locks. Vam vim vum: you are the queen of speech. Kram krim krum: you are the goddess Kalika. Sham shim shum: bring me what is good. The syllables are sound-forms, recited as they are.

    धां धीं धूं: आप धूर्जटि, यानी जटाधारी शिव, की पत्नी हैं। वां वीं वूं: आप वाणी की स्वामिनी हैं। क्रां क्रीं क्रूं: आप कालिका देवी हैं। शां शीं शूं: मेरा कल्याण करो। ये बीज ध्वनि-रूप हैं, इन्हें जैसे हैं वैसे ही पढ़ा जाता है।

  6. Verse 11

    हुं हुं हुङ्काररूपिण्यै जं जं जं जम्भनादिनी ।
    भ्रां भ्रीं भ्रूं भैरवी भद्रे भवान्यै ते नमो नमः ॥

Hum hum humkara rupinyai jam jam jam jambha nadini,
Bhram bhrim bhrum bhairavi bhadre bhavanyai te namo namah.

Hum hum: to you whose form is the sound hum. Jam jam jam: you are Jambhanadini, of the fearsome roar. Bhram bhrim bhrum: Bhairavi, gracious one, Bhavani, I bow to you again and again.

    हुं हुं: हुंकार-रूपिणी, आपको। जं जं जं: आप जम्भनादिनी हैं, जिनकी गर्जना भयानक है। भ्रां भ्रीं भ्रूं: हे भैरवी, हे कल्याणी, हे भवानी, आपको बार-बार नमस्कार।

  7. Verse 12

    अं कं चं टं तं पं यं शं वीं दुं ऐं वीं हं क्षं ।
    धिजाग्रं धिजाग्रं त्रोटय त्रोटय दीप्तं कुरु कुरु स्वाहा ॥

Am kam cham tam tam pam yam sham vim dum aim vim ham ksham,
Dhijagram dhijagram trotaya trotaya diptam kuru kuru svaha.

Seed syllables, recited as they are and not translated: am kam cham tam tam pam yam sham vim dum aim vim ham ksham. Then "dhijagram" twice, a mantra word with no agreed meaning, and "break through, break through, make it shine, make it shine, svaha".

    ये बीज हैं, इन्हें जैसे हैं वैसे ही पढ़ा जाता है, इनका अनुवाद नहीं होता: अं कं चं टं तं पं यं शं वीं दुं ऐं वीं हं क्षं। फिर दो बार "धिजाग्रं", जिसका कोई निश्चित अर्थ नहीं बताया जाता, और फिर "तोड़ो, तोड़ो, प्रकाशित करो, प्रकाशित करो, स्वाहा"।

  8. Verse 13

    पां पीं पूं पार्वती पूर्णा खां खीं खूं खेचरी तथा ।
    सां सीं सूं सप्तशती देव्या मन्त्रसिद्धिं कुरुष्व मे ॥

Pam pim pum parvati purna kham khim khum khechari tatha,
Sam sim sum saptashati devya mantra siddhim kurushva me.

Pam pim pum: you are Parvati, the complete one. Kham khim khum: you are Khechari, who moves through the sky. Sam sim sum: make the mantra of the Saptashati of the Goddess succeed for me.

    पां पीं पूं: आप पूर्णा पार्वती हैं। खां खीं खूं: आप खेचरी हैं, जो आकाश में विचरती हैं। सां सीं सूं: देवी की सप्तशती के मन्त्र को मेरे लिए सिद्ध करो।

Verses 14 and 15: keep it hidden

  1. Verse 14

    इदं तु कुञ्जिकास्तोत्रं मन्त्रजागर्तिहेतवे ।
    अभक्ते नैव दातव्यं गोपितं रक्ष पार्वति ॥

Idam tu kunjika stotram mantra jagarti hetave,
Abhakte naiva datavyam gopitam raksha parvati.

This Kunjika Stotram is for awakening the mantra. Never give it to one without devotion; Parvati, keep it hidden and guard it.

    यह कुंजिका स्तोत्र मन्त्र को जाग्रत करने के लिए है। इसे भक्तिहीन व्यक्ति को कभी न देना; हे पार्वती, इसे छिपाकर इसकी रक्षा करना।

  2. Verse 15

    यस्तु कुञ्जिकया देवि हीनां सप्तशतीं पठेत् ।
    न तस्य जायते सिद्धिररण्ये रोदनं यथा ॥

Yastu kunjikaya devi hinam saptashatim pathet,
Na tasya jayate siddhir aranye rodanam yatha.

Goddess, whoever recites the Saptashati without the Kunjika gains nothing by it, like one weeping in a forest where no one can hear.

    हे देवी, जो कुंजिका के बिना सप्तशती का पाठ करता है, उसे सिद्धि नहीं मिलती; वह जंगल में रोने जैसा है, जिसे कोई नहीं सुनता।
