Every morning before dawn at Tirumala, priests sing these verses at the golden door of the sanctum to wake Lord Venkateswara. They were composed in the 15th century by Prativadi Bhayankaram Annan, a disciple of Manavala Mamuni. The Suprabhatam proper, 29 verses, opens with the words the sage Vishvamitra used to wake Lord Rama as a boy, in the Ramayana, then greets the Lord on his hills as the whole world wakes to serve him. The Stotram praises him, the Prapatti takes refuge at his feet, and the Mangalashasanam wishes him glory. Reciting from memory? Hide the meaning.

    Shri venkatesha charanau sharanam prapadye.

These feet of yours, strewn with fresh flowers that never fade on the glad earth, are the jewels of the peak of Venkatadri and delight every mind and every eye. I take refuge at the feet of Sri Venkatesha.

  14. Verse 14

    Matus stanaviva shishor amritayamanau,
    Praptau paraspara tulam atulantarau te,
    Shri venkatesha charanau sharanam prapadye.

Those who surrender come first of all to these feet, and find them as sweet as nectar, as a mother’s milk is to her child; the two of them can be matched only with each other, and with nothing else. I take refuge at the feet of Sri Venkatesha.

  15. Verse 15

    Samsara taraka dayardra driganchalena,
    Saumyopayantri munina mama darshitau te,
    Shri venkatesha charanau sharanam prapadye.

These are the feet shown to me by the sage Saumya Jamatri, that is Manavala Mamuni, whose lotus feet the purest souls always serve, and whose glance, soft with mercy, carries people across the sea of birth and death. I take refuge at the feet of Sri Venkatesha.

  16. Verse 16

    Prapye tvayi svayam upeyataya sphurantya,
    Nityashritaya niravadya gunaya tubhyam,
Syam kinkaro vrishagirisha na jatu mahyam.

Lord of Sri: Sri herself brings us to you, the way, and shines with you, the goal. Lord of the Vrisha hill, always joined with her and flawless in every virtue, may I be your servant, and never one who serves only himself.

How to recite it

  • When · At dawn, before or as the sun rises, as it is sung at Tirumala, and above all on Saturdays, in the month of Purattasi and at the Brahmotsavam. At Tirumala the Suprabhata Seva is booked through TTD; in the month of Dhanurmasa the Tiruppavai is sung there instead.
  • How many times · Once, all four parts, is the full recitation. On a busy morning many recite the 29 verses of the Suprabhatam alone, or play a recording and follow along.
  • With what · Sit before an image of Lord Venkateswara, light a ghee lamp, and offer tulasi leaves, flowers and a little fruit or sweet. Many bathe first and recite facing east.
  • To close · End with the last verse of the Mangalashasanam and a bow, then chant “Om Namo Venkatesaya” or “Govinda, Govinda”, as pilgrims do on the hills.
