Dakshinamurthy Stotram
Adi Shankaracharya’s hymn to Lord Shiva as Dakshinamurthy, the silent teacher under the banyan tree, opening “Vishvam darpana drishyamana nagari”. In English letters, with the meaning of every verse in plain words.
Dakshinamurthy is Lord Shiva as the teacher who faces south. Under a banyan tree he sits with old sages as his pupils, and their doubts end in his silence. In ten verses Shankaracharya sets out Advaita: the world we see is within us, like a city in a mirror, and the Self that shines in all of it is one. The six dhyana verses come first; the lines of one more that some give are held back until their reading is settled. Reciting from memory? Hide the meaning.

Varshishthante vasad rishiganair avritam brahmanishthaih,
Acharyendram karakalita chinmudram anandarupam,
Svatmaramam muditavadanam Dakshinamurtim ide.I praise Dakshinamurthy. He is young, yet he makes the truth of the supreme Brahman plain by silence alone, and the oldest of sages, all of them settled in Brahman, sit round him as his pupils. Chief of teachers, his hand shows the chin mudra, the sign of knowledge; he is bliss in form, content in his own Self, his face full of joy.

Guros tu maunam vyakhyanam shishyas tu chchhinna samshayah.A wonder: at the foot of the banyan the pupils are old and the teacher is young. The teacher explains in silence, and the pupils’ doubts are gone.

He spreads it out at will, as a magician does his show, or a great yogi his powers. To him, the guru in person, Shri Dakshinamurthy, I bow.

To him, the guru in person, Shri Dakshinamurthy, I bow.

They argue hard, but they are as easily misled as a child or a blind man, in the old comparison. He destroys this great delusion, which the play of maya’s power has made. To him, the guru in person, Shri Dakshinamurthy, I bow.

On waking he knows, “I was asleep”: the one who was there all the while is recognised. To him, the guru in person, Shri Dakshinamurthy, I bow.

So whoever hears it, thinks over its meaning, meditates on it and sings it comes, of himself, to the lordship that is the great glory of being the Self of all, and with it the eightfold power, unhindered.
