Shri Hari Stotram

The hymn of Paramahamsa Swami Brahmananda of Pushkar to Lord Vishnu as Hari, opening “Jagajjalapalam”: every verse gathers his names and ends “Bhaje’ham bhaje’ham”, I worship him. In English letters, with the meaning of every verse.

Seven of its eight verses and the closing verseAbout 4 min to recite

Hari is a name of Lord Vishnu: the one who takes away sorrow. Its verses move in the bhujangaprayata metre, the gait of a gliding serpent, and each piles up his names, keeper of the worlds, Goddess Lakshmi’s companion, the far shore of the ocean of birth and death, before it comes back to the same words: I worship him, I worship him. The last verse promises Vishnu’s world, free of sorrow, to anyone who recites the hymn each day with a settled mind. For now the page gives only the verses that two independent families of sources agree on, letter for letter, so the eighth verse, “Ramavamabhagam”, is held back until its reading is settled. Reciting from memory? Hide the meaning.

Verses 1 to 7

  1. Verse 1

    Jagajjalapalam kachatkanthamalam,
    Sharachchandra bhalam mahadaitya kalam,
    Nabho nila kayam duravara mayam,
    Supadma sahayam bhaje'ham bhaje'ham.

He keeps the whole web of the worlds, and a garland shines at his throat; his brow is bright as the autumn moon, and he is death to the mighty demons; his body is blue as the sky, his maya is hard to see beyond, and Lakshmi of the lotus is ever at his side. Him I worship, him I worship.

  2. Verse 2

    Sadambhodhi vasam galat pushpa hasam,
    Jagat sannivasam shataditya bhasam,
Gada chakra shastram lasat pita vastram,
    Hasach charu vaktram bhaje'ham bhaje'ham.

He makes his home in the ocean, and his smile is soft as petals falling; the whole world dwells in him, and he shines like a hundred suns; the mace and the discus are his weapons, his yellow robe gleams, and his lovely face is smiling. Him I worship, him I worship.

  3. Verse 3

Rama kantha haram shruti vrata saram,
    Jalantar viharam dhara bhara haram,
    Chidananda rupam manojna svarupam,
    Dhritaneka rupam bhaje'ham bhaje'ham.

He is the necklace at Lakshmi’s throat and the heart of all the Vedas; he moves within the waters and lifts the weight from the earth; his nature is awareness and joy, his form delights the mind, and he has taken many forms. Him I worship, him I worship.

  4. Verse 4

    Jara janma hinam paranandapinam,
    Samadhana linam sadaivanavinam,
    Jagaj janma hetum suranika ketum,
    Trilokaika setum bhaje'ham bhaje'ham.

Old age and birth do not touch him, and he is full of the highest bliss; he rests in perfect stillness and is ever the ancient one; he is the reason the world was born, the banner at the head of the gods’ armies, and the one bridge across the three worlds. Him I worship, him I worship.

  5. Verse 5

    Kritamnaya ganam khagadhisha yanam,
    Vimukter nidanam hararati manam,
    Svabhaktanukulam jagad vriksha mulam,
    Nirastarta shulam bhaje'ham bhaje'ham.

The Vedas are sung in his praise, and Garuda, king of the birds, carries him; he is the first cause of freedom, and he humbles the pride of his foes; he is always kind to those who love him, the root of the tree that is the world, and he takes away the sharp pain of the suffering. Him I worship, him I worship.

  6. Verse 6

    Samastamaresham dvirephabha kesham,
    Jagad bimba lesham hridakasha desham,
    Sada divya deham vimuktakhileham,
    Suvaikuntha geham bhaje'ham bhaje'ham.

He is lord of all the gods, and his hair is dark as a black bee; the whole world is only a glimmer of his image, and the space within the heart is where he lives; his body is ever divine, he is free of every craving, and fair Vaikuntha is his home. Him I worship, him I worship.

  7. Verse 7

    Surali balishtham triloki varishtham,
    Gurunam garishtham svarupaika nishtham,
    Sada yuddha dhiram mahavira viram,
    Bhavambhodhi tiram bhaje'ham bhaje'ham.

He is the strongest of all the hosts of the gods and the best in the three worlds; greatest of all teachers, he stays fixed in his own true nature; ever steady in battle, the hero of great heroes, he is the far shore of the ocean of birth and death. Him I worship, him I worship.

Verse 9: the fruit of reciting it

  1. Verse 9

Idam yas tu nityam samadhaya chittam,
    Pathed ashtakam kantha haram Murareh,
Sa Vishnor vishokam dhruvam yati lokam,
Jara janma shokam punar vindate no.

Whoever settles the mind and recites these eight verses every day, a necklace for Murari, surely goes to the world of Vishnu, where there is no sorrow, and never again meets the grief of old age and birth.
