Jagannath Ashtakam
Adi Shankaracharya’s eight verses to Lord Jagannath of Puri, who is Lord Krishna of Vrindavan, each ending with one wish: may Jagannath, the Lord, come before my eyes. In English letters, with the meaning of every verse.
The first two verses see Lord Jagannath as Lord Krishna, playing his flute in Vrindavan. The next four find him at Puri: in his temple by the sea with Balabhadra and Subhadra, worshipped by the gods, riding his chariot through the crowds, and resting on Niladri, the blue hill. The last two ask for nothing but him. Every verse ends with the same line, so the hymn is quick to learn by heart. Reciting from memory? Hide the meaning.
Verses 1 and 2: Krishna of Vrindavan
- Verse 1

Muda gopi nari vadana kamalasvada madhupah,
Rama shambhu brahmamarapati ganesharchita pado,
Jagannathah svami nayana patha gami bhavatu me.At times he fills the groves on the bank of the Kalindi, the Yamuna, with music. Like a bee he joyfully drinks in the beauty of the lotus faces of the cowherd women. His feet are worshipped by Lakshmi, Shiva, Brahma, Indra, king of the gods, and Ganesha. May Jagannath, the Lord, come before my eyes.

Jagannathah svami nayana patha gami bhavatu me.In his left hand is the flute, on his head a peacock feather, and fine silk round his waist. From the corners of his eyes he gives loving glances to his friends. He is known for ever by his play in lovely Vrindavan, where he lives. May Jagannath, the Lord, come before my eyes.
Verses 3 to 6: the lord of Puri
- Verse 3
Mahambhodhes tire kanaka ruchire nila shikhare,
Vasan prasadantah sahaja balabhadrena balina,
Subhadra madhyasthah sakala sura sevavasarado,
Jagannathah svami nayana patha gami bhavatu me.On the shore of the great ocean, on the blue hill that shines like gold, he lives in his temple with his strong brother Balabhadra. With Subhadra between them, he gives every god the chance to serve him. May Jagannath, the Lord, come before my eyes.
- Verse 4

Rama vani soma sphurad amala padmodbhava mukhaih,
Surendrair aradhyah shruti gana shikha gita charito,
Jagannathah svami nayana patha gami bhavatu me.He is an ocean of mercy, dark and lovely as a row of rain clouds. Lakshmi and Saraswati, Soma, Brahma born of the bright, spotless lotus, Indra and the gods all worship him, and the summit of the Vedas, the Upanishads, sings of his deeds. May Jagannath, the Lord, come before my eyes.
Ratharudho gachchhan pathi milita bhudeva patalaih,
Stuti pradurbhavam pratipadam upakarnya sadayah,
Daya sindhur bandhuh sakala jagatam sindhu sutaya,
Jagannathah svami nayana patha gami bhavatu me.Riding his chariot along the road, at every step he kindly listens to the hymns sung by the crowds of Brahmins gathered round him. He is an ocean of compassion, the friend of all the worlds, with Lakshmi, the daughter of the ocean. May Jagannath, the Lord, come before my eyes.
Parabrahmapidah kuvalaya dalotphulla nayano,
Nivasi niladrau nihita charanonanta shirasi,
Rasanando radha sarasa vapur alingana sukho,
Jagannathah svami nayana patha gami bhavatu me.He is the crown of the supreme Brahman, his eyes wide open like the petals of a blooming blue lotus. He lives on Niladri, the blue hill, his feet resting on the head of Ananta, the serpent. He is joy itself, and his happiness is Radha’s loving embrace. May Jagannath, the Lord, come before my eyes.
Verses 7 and 8: what the devotee asks
- Verse 7

Sada kale kale pramatha patina gita charito,
Jagannathah svami nayana patha gami bhavatu me.I do not pray for a kingdom, nor for gold, pleasures or riches; I do not beg for a beautiful bride whom everyone would long for. Shiva, the lord of the Pramathas, sings of his deeds at every hour. May Jagannath, the Lord, come before my eyes.

Aho dinanatham nihitam achalam patum anisham,
Jagannathah svami nayana patha gami bhavatu me.Lord of the gods, take away quickly this empty round of worldly life. Lord of the Yadavas, take away the endless heap of my sins. Ah, you stand here firm and unmoving, to protect the poor and the helpless day and night. May Jagannath, the Lord, come before my eyes.
How to recite it
- When · Every morning, or when the evening lamp is lit; above all through the Rath Yatra, in the month of Ashadha (June or July), and on Snana Purnima, the full moon of Jyeshtha, when Lord Jagannath is bathed. Many also recite it on Ekadashi.
- How many times · Once is complete. Some recite it three times, or sing the refrain again after every verse.
- With what · Sit before a picture of Lord Jagannath, Balabhadra and Subhadra, light a ghee lamp, and offer tulsi leaves, flowers and a simple sweet, shared afterwards as prasad.
- To close · End with “Jai Jagannath”, the call of the pilgrims at Puri, or with the closing line, “Iti Shrimad Shankaracharya pranitam Jagannathashtakam sampurnam”: here ends the Jagannath Ashtakam, composed by Shankaracharya.
