Ganapati Atharvashirsha
The Upanishad of Ganapati, attached to the Atharva Veda: a short text in prose that names Lord Ganesha as Brahman, the one reality, gives his mantra, Om Gam Ganapataye namah, and ends on the fruit of reciting it. In English letters, with the meaning of every section.
Begin with the shanti path, the prayer for peace, then recite the 14 sections at an even pace. Sections 1 to 6 praise Ganapati as all that is; 7 to 10 give his mantra, his Gayatri, his form and his names; 11 to 14 tell the fruit of reciting it. Reciting from memory? Hide the meaning.

Om Gam Ganapataye namah.First say the first sound of “gana”, the g, and then the first of all letters, the a. After them comes the nasal sound, shining with the half-moon and made full with Om. This is the form of your mantra. The g is its first part, the a its middle part, the nasal sound its last part, and the dot above its highest part. The sound of it joins them, and the joining makes them one. This is the knowledge of Ganesha. Its seer is Ganaka, its metre is nichrid gayatri, and its deity is Shri Mahaganapati. Om Gam Ganapataye namah: Om, Gam, I bow to Ganapati.

They are freed from the five great wrongs. Reciting it in the evening wipes away the wrongs of the day; reciting it in the morning wipes away the wrongs of the night; reciting it morning and evening, they become free of wrong. They gain dharma, wealth, the joys of life and liberation. This Atharvashirsha is not to be given to one who is not a true student; whoever gives it away out of folly does wrong. Whatever one recites it for a thousand times, one can win through it.

Whoever knows this practice, handed down from Brahma and the sages, is never afraid of anything.

How to recite it
- When · On Chaturthi, the fourth day of the moon, which section 12 names, above all on Sankashti Chaturthi and through the ten days of Ganesh Chaturthi. Many recite it every morning, or before beginning anything new.
- How many times · Once is complete. Many recite it 21 times on Ganesh Chaturthi, and section 11 speaks of a thousand recitations for a wish.
- With what · Sit before an image of Lord Ganesha, offer durva grass, red flowers and modaks, as sections 9 and 13 describe, and light a ghee diya. Some bathe the image as they recite it (abhisheka), as section 12 says.
- Learning it · It is learnt from a teacher, sound by sound, as section 11 asks that it be given only to a true student.
- To close · End with the shanti path, Bhadram karnebhih, once more, as the sources do, and “Iti Ganapatyupanishat samapta”: here ends the Ganapati Upanishad.
