Gajendra Moksha

The hymn of the king of the elephants, "Om namo bhagavate tasmai", from the eighth book of the Bhagavata Purana: held by a crocodile, Gajendra prays to the Lord beyond every form, and Lord Vishnu comes to free him. In English letters, with the meaning of every verse.

33 versesAbout 12 min to recite

Gajendra, king of the elephants, lived on the mountain Trikuta. One day he led his herd down to a lake on the mountain, and a crocodile seized his foot. They pulled against each other, in the water and out of it, for a thousand years, until his strength gave way. Then he remembered a prayer from an earlier life and turned to the Lord beyond every name and form; Lord Vishnu came on Garuda, drew him from the lake and freed him with his discus. The next chapter tells that the crocodile was a gandharva, Huhu, under a sage’s curse, and Gajendra had once been Indradyumna, a king devoted to Vishnu. Reciting from memory? Hide the meaning.

Verse 1: Gajendra turns to prayer

  1. Verse 1

Evam vyavasito buddhya samadhaya mano hridi,
Jajapa paramam japyam prag janmany anushikshitam.

Shuka said: His mind made up, and his heart held still within, Gajendra began to repeat the highest of prayers, one he had learnt in an earlier birth.

Verses 2 to 8: the Lord beyond all

  1. Verse 2

Om namo bhagavate tasmai yata etach chidatmakam,
    Purushayadi bijaya pareshayabhidhimahi.

Gajendra said: Om, I bow to the Lord through whom this world is alive with awareness. I meditate on him, the Supreme Person, the first seed of all, the highest Lord.

  2. Verse 3

Yasminn idam yatash chedam yenedam ya idam svayam,
Yosmat parasmachcha paras tam prapadye svayambhuvam.

In whom this world rests, from whom it comes, by whom it is made, and who is himself this world; who is beyond it and beyond its cause too: in him, the self-born, I take refuge.

  3. Verse 4

    Yah svatmanidam nija mayayarpitam,
Kvachid vibhatam kva cha tat tirohitam,
    Aviddha drik sakshyubhayam tadikshate,
    Sa atma mulovatu mam paratparah.

This world, set within himself by his own power of illusion, now shines forth and now is hidden; he, the witness whose sight is never clouded, watches both. May he, who is his own root and higher than the highest, protect me.

  4. Verse 5

    Kalena panchatvam iteshu kritsnasho,
    Lokeshu paleshu cha sarva hetushu,
    Tamas tadasid gahanam gabhiram,
    Yastasya parebhivirajate vibhuh.

When in time the worlds, their guardians and all the causes of things have wholly gone back into the five elements, only a thick, deep darkness remains; and beyond it shines the all-pervading Lord.

  5. Verse 6

Na yasya deva rishayah padam vidur,
    Jantuh punah korhati gantum iritum,
    Yatha natasyakritibhir vicheshtato,
    Duratyayanukramanah sa mavatu.

Not even the gods and the sages know where he dwells; how then could any creature reach him or speak of him? Like an actor moving through many roles, his ways are hard to follow. May he protect me.

  6. Verse 7

    Didrikshavo yasya padam sumangalam,
    Vimukta sanga munayah susadhavah,
    Charantyaloka vratam avranam vane,
Bhutatma bhutah suhridah sa me gatih.

Longing to see his blessed feet, sages free of every attachment, good and pure, friends to all, who see their own self in every being, keep in the forest a flawless vow beyond the ways of the world. He is my refuge.

  7. Verse 8

Na vidyate yasya cha janma karma va,
Na nama rupe guna dosha eva va,
    Tathapi lokapyaya sambhavaya yah,
    Svamayaya tanyanukalam richchhati.

He has no birth and no deeds, no name or form, no virtue or fault; and yet, for the making and ending of the worlds, he takes these on from time to time by his own power.

Verses 9 to 18: I bow to him

  1. Verse 9

    Tasmai namah pareshaya brahmanenanta shaktaye,
    Arupayoru rupaya nama ashcharya karmane.

I bow to him, the highest Lord, Brahman of endless power; to him who is formless and yet has countless forms, whose deeds are a wonder, I bow.

  2. Verse 10

    Nama atma pradipaya sakshine paramatmane,
Namo giram viduraya manasash chetasam api.

I bow to the Supreme Self, the witness, the lamp that lights itself; I bow to him who is far beyond words, beyond the mind and beyond thought.

  3. Verse 11

    Sattvena pratilabhyaya naishkarmyena vipashchita,
Namah kaivalya nathaya nirvana sukha samvide.

I bow to the Lord of liberation, who is the knowing of perfect peace, and whom the wise reach through purity of heart and through work done without desire.

  4. Verse 12

Namah shantaya ghoraya mudhaya guna dharmine,
Nirvisheshaya samyaya namo jnana ghanaya cha.

I bow to him who seems calm, fierce or dull as he takes on the three qualities; I bow to him who is beyond every distinction, always the same, wisdom itself.

  5. Verse 13

    Kshetrajnaya namas tubhyam sarvadhyakshaya sakshine,
    Purushayatma mulaya mula prakritaye namah.

I bow to you, knower of the field that is the body, overseer and witness of all; I bow to you, the Person who is his own root, and the root of nature itself.

  6. Verse 14

Sarvendriya guna drashtre sarva pratyaya hetave,
    Asatachchhayayoktaya sadabhasaya te namah.

I bow to you who see all that the senses take in, the cause of all knowing; you are known through this unreal world, your shadow, and you shine in all that is.

  7. Verse 15

    Namo namaste khila karanaya,
    Nishkaranayadbhuta karanaya,
    Sarvagamamnaya maharnavaya,
    Namopavargaya parayanaya.

Again and again I bow to you, the cause of all, who yourself have no cause, the wondrous cause; the great ocean into which all scriptures and traditions flow. I bow to you, who are freedom and the final refuge.

  8. Verse 16

    Gunarani chhanna chidushmapaya,
    Tat kshobha visphurjita manasaya,
    Naishkarmya bhavena vivarjitagama,
    Svayam prakashaya namaskaromi.

You are the fire of awareness hidden in the kindling of the three qualities; when they stir, your mind wakes to create. To you, who shine of yourself in those who have set aside the rites of scripture and live free of selfish action, I bow.

  9. Verse 17

    Madrik prapanna pashu pasha vimokshanaya,
    Muktaya bhuri karunaya namolayaya,
Svamshena sarva tanu bhrin manasi pratita,
    Pratyag drishe bhagavate brihate namaste.

To you who free from their bonds creatures like me who come to you for shelter; who are free yourself, boundless in mercy and never idle: I bow. Known by a part of yourself in the mind of every embodied being, you are the witness within; to you, the great Lord, I bow.

  10. Verse 18

    Atmatmajapta griha vitta janeshu saktair,
    Dushprapanaya guna sanga vivarjitaya,
    Muktatmabhih svahridaye paribhavitaya,
    Jnanatmane bhagavate nama ishvaraya.

Those bound to their bodies, children, friends, home, wealth and people find you hard to reach; you are untouched by the qualities, and free souls meditate on you in their own hearts. I bow to the Lord, whose very self is knowledge.

Verses 19 to 29: the refuge Gajendra asks for

  1. Verse 19

    Yam dharma kamartha vimukti kama,
    Bhajanta ishtam gatim apnuvanti,
    Kim chashisho ratyapi deham avyayam,
    Karotu medabhra dayo vimokshanam.

Those who seek dharma, pleasure, wealth or freedom worship him and reach the goal they long for; and he gives them other blessings too, even a body that does not decay. May he, whose mercy is boundless, set me free.

  2. Verse 20

    Ekantino yasya na kanchanartham,
    Vanchhanti ye vai bhagavat prapannah,
    Atyadbhutam tach charitam sumangalam,
    Gayanta ananda samudra magnah.

His single-hearted devotees, who have given themselves to the Lord, want nothing at all from him; they sing of his wondrous, blessed deeds, lost in an ocean of joy.

  3. Verse 21

    Tam aksharam brahma param paresham,
    Avyaktam adhyatmika yoga gamyam,
    Atindriyam sukshmam ivatiduram,
    Anantam adyam paripurnam ide.

I praise him, the imperishable, Brahman, the highest, the Lord of lords; unmanifest, reached by the yoga of the inner self; beyond the senses, subtle, as if far away; endless, the first, whole in every way.

  4. Verse 22

Yasya brahmadayo deva veda lokash characharah,
Nama rupa vibhedena phalgvya cha kalaya kritah.

Brahma and the gods, the Vedas, and the worlds with all that moves and all that is still, are made, with their many names and forms, from a tiny part of him.

  5. Verse 23

    Yatharchishogneh savitur gabhastayo,
    Niryanti samyantyasakrit svarochishah,
    Tatha yatoyam guna sampravaho,
    Buddhir manah khani sharira sargah.

As sparks fly from a fire and rays from the sun, and go back into them again and again, so from him come, and to him return, the flow of the qualities, the intellect, the mind, the senses and the making of bodies.

  6. Verse 24

Sa vai na devasura martya tiryan,
Na stri na shandho na puman na jantuh,
Nayam gunah karma na san na chasan,
    Nishedha shesho jayatad asheshah.

He is not god or demon, human or beast; not woman, man or neither, nor any creature; not a quality, not an action, not being and not non-being. He is what remains when all is denied, and he is all: may he be victorious.

  7. Verse 25

    Jijivishe naham ihamuya kim,
    Antar bahish chavritayebha yonya,
    Ichchhami kalena na yasya viplavas,
    Tasyatma lokavaranasya moksham.

I do not wish to live on here: what use is this birth as an elephant, covered in darkness within and without? I long to be freed from the veil that hides the light of the self, a veil that time itself does not wear away.

  8. Verse 26

    Soham vishvasrijam vishvam avishvam vishvavedasam,
Vishvatmanam ajam brahma pranatosmi param padam.

So I bow to him who made the universe, who is the universe and beyond it, who knows the universe; the soul of the universe, unborn, Brahman, the highest goal.

  9. Verse 27

Yoga randhita karmano hridi yoga vibhavite,
Yogino yam prapashyanti yogesham tam natosmyaham.

Yogis whose past deeds have been burnt away by yoga see him in hearts made pure by yoga. I bow to him, the Lord of yoga.

  10. Verse 28

    Namo namastubhyam asahya vega,
    Shakti trayayakhila dhi gunaya,
    Prapanna palaya duranta shaktaye,
    Kadindriyanam anavapya vartmane.

Again and again I bow to you, whose force no one can bear, whose three powers appear as all things and all minds; who protect those who come to you, whose power has no end, and whose path cannot be found by those whose senses run wild.

  11. Verse 29

Nayam veda svam atmanam yachchhaktyaham dhiya hatam,
    Tam duratyaya mahatmyam bhagavantam itosmyaham.

Struck down by the sense of "I" that his power makes, this creature does not know its own self. I go for shelter to the Lord, whose greatness no one can pass beyond.

Verses 30 to 33: Hari comes

  1. Verse 30

    Evam gajendram upavarnita nirvishesham,
    Brahmadayo vividha linga bhidabhimanah,
    Naite yadopasasripur nikhilatmakatvat,
    Tatrakhilamaramayo harir avirasit.

Shuka said: Gajendra had praised the Lord without naming any one form. Brahma and the other gods, each holding to his own separate form, did not come near; and so Hari, who holds all the gods within himself, appeared there, for he is the self of all.

  2. Verse 31

    Tam tadvad artam upalabhya jagannivasah,
    Stotram nishamya divijaih saha samstuvadbhih,
    Chhandomayena garudena samuhyamanash,
    Chakrayudhobhyagamad ashu yato gajendrah.

Seeing him in such distress and hearing his hymn, Hari, in whom the world dwells, came at once to where Gajendra was, borne on Garuda, whose body is the Vedas, his discus in his hand, with the gods following and singing his praise.

  3. Verse 32

    Sontah sarasyuru balena grihita arto,
Drishtva garutmati harim kha upatta chakram,
Utkshipya sambuja karam giram aha krichchhran,
    Narayanakhila guro bhagavan namaste.

Held fast in the lake by a mighty strength and in pain, Gajendra saw Hari in the sky on Garuda, his discus raised. Lifting his trunk with a lotus in it, he spoke with great effort: "Narayana, teacher of all, Lord, I bow to you."

  4. Verse 33

    Tam vikshya piditam ajah sahasavatirya,
    Sagraham ashu sarasah kripayojjahara,
    Grahad vipatita mukhad arina gajendram,
    Sampashyatam harir amumuchad uchchhriyanam.

Seeing him in pain, the unborn Lord came swiftly down and in his mercy drew him out of the lake at once, crocodile and all. Then, as the gods looked on, Hari split open the crocodile’s jaws with his discus and set Gajendra free.
