Jai Saraswati Mata

The aarti of Goddess Saraswati, goddess of learning, music and speech, sung on Vasant Panchami, in schools and before study. In English letters, with the meaning of every verse.

A refrain, four of its five verses and the closing verseAbout 4 min to sing

Sing the refrain first, then each verse, coming back to the refrain after every verse while the lamp is waved before Goddess Saraswati. For now it gives only the verses that two independent families of sources agree on, letter for letter; the lines of the third verse are held back until their reading is settled.

How to sing it

  • When · On Vasant Panchami above all, on Thursdays, through Navratri, and before study, an exam or a performance.
  • How · Light a ghee diya on a plate and wave it in slow clockwise circles before Goddess Saraswati while everyone sings. Set your books, pens or instrument before her image.
  • After · Pass the lamp around so each person can draw its warmth towards their eyes, then share the prasad, often something yellow on Vasant Panchami.
