Shri Ram Stuti

Sant Goswami Tulsidas’s hymn to Lord Rama, “Shri Ramachandra Kripalu Bhaju Mana”, from the Vinaya Patrika: five verses that picture him from his lotus eyes to his bow. In English letters, with the meaning of every verse.

Five versesAbout 3 min to recite

Sing it slowly, as most families do, at the evening lamp or at the end of a reading of the Ramayana. The first verse asks the mind to worship Lord Rama; the last is Sant Goswami Tulsidas’s own prayer that Rama live in his heart. Reciting from memory? Hide the meaning.

The five verses

  1. Verse 1

Shri Ramachandra kripalu bhaju man, harana bhava bhaya darunam,
Nava kanja lochana, kanja mukha kara, kanja pada kanjarunam.

O mind, worship kind Shri Ramachandra, who takes away the hard fear of birth and death. His eyes are fresh lotuses; his face, his hands and his feet are lotuses, red as the dawn.

  2. Verse 2

Kandarpa aganita amita chhavi, nava nila nirada sundaram,
Pata pita manahun tadita ruchi shuchi, naumi Janaka sutavaram.

His beauty is greater than that of countless gods of love; he is lovely as a fresh dark-blue rain cloud. His yellow robe shines on him like lightning, bright and pure. I bow to him, the husband of Sita, daughter of Janaka.

  3. Verse 3

Bhaju dinabandhu dinesha danava, daitya vansha nikandanam,
Raghunanda ananda kanda Koshala chanda, Dasharatha nandanam.

O mind, worship the friend of the poor, the sun of his line, who wiped out the clans of the demons; the joy of the Raghus, the root of all happiness, the moon of Kosala, the son of Dasharatha.

  4. Verse 4

Sira mukuta kundala tilaka charu, udaru anga vibhushanam,
Ajanu bhuja shara chapa dhara, sangrama jita Khara Dushanam.

A crown on his head, earrings at his ears, a lovely tilak on his brow and fine ornaments on every limb; his arms reach to his knees, he carries his bow and arrows, and he won the battle against Khara and Dushana.

  5. Verse 5

Iti vadati Tulsidas, Shankara Shesha muni mana ranjanam,
Mama hridaya kanja nivasa kuru, kamadi khaladala ganjanam.

So says Tulsidas: you who delight the hearts of Shankara, of Shesha and of the sages, make your home in the lotus of my heart, and destroy the band of wicked foes within, desire and the rest.
