Damad damad damad daman ninadavad damarvayam,
Chakara chanda tandavam tanotu nah Shivah shivam. The waters of the Ganga pour down through the forest of his matted hair and make the ground holy; a long garland of great serpents hangs at his neck; and his little drum sounds out damad, damad, damad as he dances the fierce Tandava. May Shiva bring us all that is good.

Kishora chandra shekhare ratih pratikshanam mama. The river of the gods whirls round and round in the deep bowl of his matted hair, its restless waves shining on his head like climbing vines; fire blazes, dhagad, dhagad, on the broad plate of his forehead; and the young crescent moon is his crown. May my heart delight in him at every moment.

May my mind find its joy in him, who wears the sky as his only clothing.

May my mind find a wonderful joy in him, the lord of all beings.

May he who wears the moon, friend of the chakora bird, as his crown give us lasting good fortune.

May that head of matted hair, of the great bearer of the skull, bring us wealth.

My love is for him, the three-eyed one.

He carries the river of the gods, wears the elephant’s hide, is lovely with the crescent moon, and holds up the weight of the whole world. May he give us good fortune.

I worship him who cut down Kama, the three cities of the demons, the bonds of birth and Daksha’s sacrifice; who cut down the elephant demon and the demon Andhaka; and who cut down Yama, death himself.

I worship him who put an end to Kama, the three cities, the round of birth and Daksha’s sacrifice; to the elephant demon and Andhaka; and to death himself.

The snakes whirl wildly about him, and their hissing breath fans the fire on his fearsome forehead so it flares up again and again; and his fierce Tandava keeps time with the deep, joyful beat of the mridanga drum, dhimid, dhimid, dhimid.

It spreads good fortune with the brightness of the fierce fire beneath the ocean; the eight great powers call it out like maidens; and it rang out at his wedding to Parvati, the bride with lovely eyes.

To think of Shankara clears away the confusion of every living being.
