O Agni, Jataveda, you who know all that is born: bring to me Lakshmi, golden in colour and lovely as a doe, who wears garlands of gold and silver, who shines like the moon and is made of gold.

O Jataveda, bring to me that Lakshmi who never goes away, so that through her I may find gold, cows and horses, and people around me.

  3. Verse 3

I take refuge in Shri, who shines like the moon, bright and glowing with fame, honoured by the gods in this world, generous and holding the lotus. May misfortune leave me; I choose you.

Verse 16: the fruit of reciting it

  1. Verse 16

Yah shuchih prayato bhutva juhuyad ajyam anvaham,
Suktam panchadasharcham cha Shri kamah satatam japet.

Whoever longs for Shri should become pure and self-controlled, offer ghee into the fire every day, and chant this hymn of fifteen verses again and again.

How to recite it

  • When · On Fridays, at the Lakshmi Puja on Diwali night, on Dhanteras and Sharad Purnima, and every day through the month of Kartik. Many recite it at sunrise or when lighting the evening lamp.
  • How many times · Once through is complete. In the puja of sixteen offerings (shodashopachara) one verse goes with each offering, so the sixteen verses are recited once. Some recite it 11 times or more as a vow.
  • With what · Sit before an image of Goddess Lakshmi seated on a lotus and light a ghee diya. Lotus or red flowers, kumkum and rice, and a sweet such as kheer are traditional. Verse 16 speaks of offering ghee into the fire, as is done at a havan.
  • Chanting · Begin with Om. In the Vedic way the hymn is chanted with the rise and fall of its accents; this page leaves the accent marks out, so learn the tune from a teacher or a recording.
  • To close · Sing her aarti, Om Jai Lakshmi Mata, and offer the sweet as prasad.
