Kanakadhara Stotram
Adi Shankaracharya’s hymn to Goddess Lakshmi, “the stream of gold”, asking again and again for one kind glance of her eyes. In English letters, with the meaning of every verse.
The story goes that young Shankara, a boy begging for his food, stopped at the door of a very poor woman. She had nothing in the house but one dried amla fruit, and she gave it to him. Moved by her kindness, he sang these verses to Goddess Lakshmi, and a shower of golden amla fruits fell on her home. Recite the 17 verses slowly, then the closing verse on the fruit of reciting it. Verse 8, asking her eyes to rain wealth like a cloud, is the heart of the hymn. Reciting from memory? Hide the meaning.
Verses 1 to 9: her kind glance
- Verse 1
Angam hareh pulaka bhushanam ashrayanti,
Bhringanganeva mukulabharanam tamalam,
Angikritakhila vibhutir apanga lila,
Mangalyadastu mama mangala devatayah. As a bee is drawn to the dark tamala tree covered in buds, her glance comes to rest on Vishnu, and his body thrills with joy. That playful sidelong glance of the goddess of all that is good holds every kind of wealth in it. May it bring me good fortune.
Mugdha muhur vidadhati vadane murareh,
Prema trapa pranihitani gatagatani,
Mala drishor madhukariva mahotpale ya,
Sa me shriyam dishatu sagara sambhavayah.Full of love and shyness, her eyes go to the face of Murari and come back again and again, like a bee that keeps returning to a great blue lotus. May that string of glances of the one born from the ocean give me wealth.
Vishvamarendra pada vibhrama dana daksham,
Ananda hetur adhikam muravidvishopi,
Ishan nishidatu mayi kshanam ikshanardham,
Indivarodara sahodaram indirayah. Her glance can give the glory of Indra, king of all the gods, and brings even more joy to Vishnu, the enemy of the demon Mura. May the half-glance of Indira, soft as the inside of a blue lotus, rest on me, if only a little, for a moment.
Amilitaksham adhigamya muda mukundam,
Ananda kandam animesham ananga tantram,
Akekara sthita kaninika pakshma netram,
Bhutyai bhaven mama bhujanga shayanganayah.Mukunda, the root of all bliss, lies with his eyes half closed in joy. Her eyes find him and stay on him without blinking, lost in love, the dark pupils still at their corners. May the eyes of the wife of the Lord who sleeps on the serpent bring me prosperity.
Bahvantare madhujitah shrita kaustubhe ya,
Haravaliva harinilamayi vibhati,
Kamaprada bhagavatopi kataksha mala,
Kalyanam avahatu me kamalalayayah. On the chest of Vishnu, who defeated the demon Madhu, where the Kaustubha jewel rests, her string of glances shines like a necklace of sapphires and grants the wishes even of the Lord. May that string of glances of the one who lives in the lotus bring me all that is good.
Kalambudali lalitorasi kaitabhareh,
Dharadhare sphurati ya tadid anganeva,
Matus samasta jagatam mahaniya murtih,
Bhadrani me dishatu bhargava nandanayah. On the chest of Vishnu, the enemy of Kaitabha, lovely as a bank of dark rain clouds, she flashes like a streak of lightning. May that glorious form of the mother of all the worlds, the daughter of the sage Bhrigu’s line, give me every blessing.
Praptam padam prathamatah khalu yat prabhavat,
Mangalyabhaji madhumathini manmathena,
Mayyapatet tad iha mantharam ikshanardham,
Mandalasam cha makaralaya kanyakayah. It was by the power of her glance that Kama, the god of love, first found a place in the heart of Vishnu, the slayer of Madhu, the home of all that is good. May that slow, gentle, half-closed glance of the daughter of the ocean fall on me here.
Dadyad dayanupavano dravinambu dharam,
Asminn akinchana vihanga shishau vishanne,
Dushkarma gharmam apaniya chiraya duram,
Narayana pranayini nayanambuvahah. The eyes of Narayana’s beloved are a rain cloud, driven by the wind of her kindness. May that cloud carry the heat of my bad deeds far away for good, and pour a stream of wealth on me, poor and downcast as a little bird that has nothing and waits for rain.
Ishta vishishta matayopi yaya dayardra,
Drishtya trivishtapa padam sulabham labhante,
Drishtih prahrishta kamalodara diptir ishtam,
Pushtim krishishta mama pushkara vishtarayah.Through her glance, soft with kindness, even people of ordinary understanding easily reach the heaven of the gods. May the glance of the one seated on the lotus, bright as the heart of a lotus in full bloom, give me the plenty I long for.

She is present in the play of making, keeping and ending the worlds. I bow to her, the young wife of the one teacher of the three worlds.
