Lingashtakam
Eight verses to Lord Shiva as the linga, each ending “Tat pranamami Sadashiva lingam”: I bow to that linga of Sadashiva. In English letters, with the meaning of every verse.
Each verse praises the linga for one more glory and comes back to the same closing line, so it is easy to learn by heart. The ninth verse gives the fruit of reciting it before Lord Shiva. Reciting from memory? Hide the meaning.
The eight verses
- Verse 1
ब्रह्ममुरारिसुरार्चितलिङ्गं
निर्मलभासितशोभितलिङ्गम् ।
जन्मजदुःखविनाशकलिङ्गं
तत् प्रणमामि सदाशिवलिङ्गम् ॥Brahma murari surarchita lingam,
Nirmala bhasita shobhita lingam,
Janmaja duhkha vinashaka lingam,
Tat pranamami Sadashiva lingam.The linga worshipped by Brahma, by Vishnu, the foe of the demon Mura, and by all the gods; lovely and shining with a pure light; which ends the sorrow that comes with being born: to that linga of Sadashiva, Shiva for ever, I bow.
जिस लिंग की पूजा ब्रह्मा जी, मुर दैत्य के शत्रु विष्णु जी और सारे देवता करते हैं, जो निर्मल प्रकाश से सुन्दर लगता है, और जो जन्म के साथ आने वाले दुखों का अन्त करता है, सदा रहने वाले शिव, सदाशिव, के उस लिंग को मैं प्रणाम करता हूँ।

देवमुनिप्रवरार्चितलिङ्गं
कामदहन करुणाकरलिङ्गम् ।
रावणदर्पविनाशनलिङ्गं
तत् प्रणमामि सदाशिवलिङ्गम् ॥Deva muni pravararchita lingam,
Kamadahana karunakara lingam,
Ravana darpa vinashana lingam,
Tat pranamami Sadashiva lingam.The linga worshipped by the gods and the greatest sages; which burned up Kama, the god of love, and is a mine of mercy; which broke the pride of Ravana: to that linga of Sadashiva I bow.
जिस लिंग की पूजा देवता और श्रेष्ठ मुनि करते हैं, जिसने कामदेव को भस्म किया और जो दया का भण्डार है, और जिसने रावण का घमण्ड तोड़ा, सदाशिव के उस लिंग को मैं प्रणाम करता हूँ।
- Verse 3
सर्वसुगन्धिसुलेपितलिङ्गं
बुद्धिविवर्धनकारणलिङ्गम् ।
सिद्धसुरासुरवन्दितलिङ्गं
तत् प्रणमामि सदाशिवलिङ्गम् ॥Sarva sugandhi sulepita lingam,
Buddhi vivardhana karana lingam,
Siddha surasura vandita lingam,
Tat pranamami Sadashiva lingam.The linga anointed with every fragrance; which makes wisdom grow; to which siddhas, gods and demons alike bow down: to that linga of Sadashiva I bow.
जिस लिंग पर हर तरह की सुगन्ध का लेप किया जाता है, जो बुद्धि को बढ़ाता है, और जिसे सिद्ध, देवता और असुर सब नमन करते हैं, सदाशिव के उस लिंग को मैं प्रणाम करता हूँ।
- Verse 4
कनकमहामणिभूषितलिङ्गं
फणिपतिवेष्टितशोभितलिङ्गम् ।
दक्षसुयज्ञविनाशनलिङ्गं
तत् प्रणमामि सदाशिवलिङ्गम् ॥Kanaka mahamani bhushita lingam,
Phanipati veshtita shobhita lingam,
Daksha suyajna vinashana lingam,
Tat pranamami Sadashiva lingam.The linga adorned with gold and great jewels; made lovely by the king of serpents coiled around it; which put an end to the grand sacrifice of Daksha: to that linga of Sadashiva I bow.
जो लिंग सोने और बड़े-बड़े रत्नों से सजा है, जिस पर लिपटे सर्पराज से उसकी शोभा बढ़ती है, और जिसने दक्ष के बड़े यज्ञ का अन्त किया, सदाशिव के उस लिंग को मैं प्रणाम करता हूँ।
- Verse 5
कुङ्कुमचन्दनलेपितलिङ्गं
पङ्कजहारसुशोभितलिङ्गम् ।
सञ्चितपापविनाशनलिङ्गं
तत् प्रणमामि सदाशिवलिङ्गम् ॥Kunkuma chandana lepita lingam,
Pankaja hara sushobhita lingam,
Sanchita papa vinashana lingam,
Tat pranamami Sadashiva lingam.The linga smeared with kumkum and sandal paste; beautiful with garlands of lotuses; which wipes away the sins gathered over many lives: to that linga of Sadashiva I bow.
जिस लिंग पर कुमकुम और चन्दन का लेप है, जो कमल के हारों से सुन्दर लगता है, और जो कई जन्मों में इकट्ठे हुए पापों को मिटा देता है, सदाशिव के उस लिंग को मैं प्रणाम करता हूँ।
- Verse 6
देवगणार्चितसेवितलिङ्गं
भावैर्भक्तिभिरेव च लिङ्गम् ।
दिनकरकोटिप्रभाकरलिङ्गं
तत् प्रणमामि सदाशिवलिङ्गम् ॥Devaganarchita sevita lingam,
Bhavair bhaktibhir eva cha lingam,
Dinakara koti prabhakara lingam,
Tat pranamami Sadashiva lingam.The linga worshipped and served by the hosts of gods, with true feeling and devotion alone; shining with the light of ten million suns: to that linga of Sadashiva I bow.
जिस लिंग की पूजा और सेवा देवताओं के समूह केवल सच्चे भाव और भक्ति से करते हैं, और जो करोड़ों सूर्यों जैसी आभा से चमकता है, सदाशिव के उस लिंग को मैं प्रणाम करता हूँ।
- Verse 7
अष्टदलोपरिवेष्टितलिङ्गं
सर्वसमुद्भवकारणलिङ्गम् ।
अष्टदरिद्रविनाशनलिङ्गं
तत् प्रणमामि सदाशिवलिङ्गम् ॥Ashtadalopari veshtita lingam,
Sarva samudbhava karana lingam,
Ashta daridra vinashana lingam,
Tat pranamami Sadashiva lingam.The linga set in the ring of an eight-petalled lotus; the cause from which all things arise; which ends the eight kinds of poverty: to that linga of Sadashiva I bow.
जो लिंग आठ पंखुड़ियों वाले कमल के घेरे में विराजमान है, जिससे सब कुछ उत्पन्न होता है, और जो आठ तरह की दरिद्रता का नाश करता है, सदाशिव के उस लिंग को मैं प्रणाम करता हूँ।
- Verse 8
सुरगुरुसुरवरपूजितलिङ्गं
सुरवनपुष्पसदार्चितलिङ्गम् ।
परात्परं परमात्मकलिङ्गं
तत् प्रणमामि सदाशिवलिङ्गम् ॥Suraguru suravara pujita lingam,
Suravana pushpa sadarchita lingam,
Paratparam paramatmaka lingam,
Tat pranamami Sadashiva lingam.The linga worshipped by Brihaspati, teacher of the gods, and by the best of the gods; always worshipped with flowers from the gardens of heaven; higher than the highest, the supreme Self: to that linga of Sadashiva I bow.
जिस लिंग की पूजा देवताओं के गुरु बृहस्पति और श्रेष्ठ देवता करते हैं, जिसकी पूजा सदा स्वर्ग के उपवन के फूलों से होती है, और जो परे से भी परे, परमात्मा का रूप है, सदाशिव के उस लिंग को मैं प्रणाम करता हूँ।
Verse 9: the fruit of reciting it
- Verse 9
लिङ्गाष्टकमिदं पुण्यं यः पठेत् शिवसन्निधौ ।
शिवलोकमवाप्नोति शिवेन सह मोदते ॥Lingashtakam idam punyam yah pathet Shiva sannidhau,
Shivalokam avapnoti Shivena saha modate.Whoever reads this holy Lingashtakam in the presence of Shiva reaches the world of Shiva and rejoices there with him.
जो कोई शिव जी के सामने इस पवित्र लिंगाष्टक का पाठ करता है, वह शिवलोक पाता है और वहाँ शिव जी के साथ आनन्द मनाता है।
How to recite it
- When · On Mondays, at Pradosh in the evening, through the month of Shravan and on Maha Shivratri, above all while offering water to a linga.
- How many times · Once is complete. Some recite it 3 or 11 times, or every Monday as a vow.
- With what · Before a Shiva linga, offer water or milk, sandal paste, kumkum, bilva leaves and flowers, as the verses describe, and light a ghee diya.
- To close · Recite the ninth verse, “Lingashtakam idam punyam”, on the fruit of reading it in Lord Shiva’s presence.
