Rudrashtakam
Sant Goswami Tulsidas’s Sanskrit hymn to Lord Shiva as Rudra, from the Uttar Kand of the Ramcharitmanas, opening “Namami Shamishan Nirvana Rupam”. In English letters, with the meaning of every verse.
In the Ramcharitmanas, the crow sage Kakabhushundi tells how, in an earlier life, he slighted his guru in a temple of Lord Shiva and was cursed; his guru sang these eight verses, and Shiva softened the curse. The first verses praise Shiva beyond all form; the last ask for his grace. Reciting from memory? Hide the meaning.
The eight verses
- Verse 1
Namamisham ishana nirvana rupam,
Vibhum vyapakam brahma veda svarupam,
Nijam nirgunam nirvikalpam niriham,
Chidakasham akashavasam bhajeham.I bow to the Lord who rules over all, whose very nature is freedom: present everywhere, filling everything, Brahman itself, the Vedas in living form. I worship him who rests in his own being, beyond all qualities and every change of mind, wanting nothing; pure awareness, wide as the sky, who makes the sky his home.
Nirakaram omkara mulam turiyam,
Gira jnana gotitam isham girisham,
Karalam mahakala kalam kripalam,
Gunagara samsara param natoham. He has no form; he is the root of Om and the fourth state, beyond waking, dreaming and deep sleep; beyond the reach of words, of thought and of the senses; the Lord of the mountain Kailash. Fearsome, the death of death itself, and yet full of mercy; the home of every virtue, beyond the round of birth and death: to him I bow.
Tusharadri sankasha gauram gabhiram,
Manobhuta koti prabha shri shariram,
Sphuran mauli kallolini charu Ganga,
Lasad bhala balendu kanthe bhujanga. He is white as the snowy Himalaya and deep beyond measure; his body glows with the beauty of ten million gods of love. On his head the lovely Ganga sparkles with her waves; the young crescent moon shines on his forehead, and serpents wind about his throat.
Chalat kundalam bhru sunetram vishalam,
Prasannananam nilakantham dayalam,
Mrigadhisha charmambaram mundamalam,
Priyam Shankaram sarvanatham bhajami.Earrings sway at his ears; his brows are fine and his eyes large and lovely; his face is calm and glad, his throat is blue, and he is kind. He wears the hide of the king of beasts and a garland of skulls. I worship Shankara, dear to all, the Lord of all.
Prachandam prakrishtam pragalbham paresham,
Akhandam ajam bhanu koti prakasham,
Trayah shula nirmulanam shulapanim,
Bhajeham Bhavanipatim bhavagamyam.Fierce, the highest, bold, the supreme Lord; whole and undivided, never born, bright as ten million suns; he pulls up by the root the three kinds of suffering and holds the trident in his hand. I worship him, the husband of Bhavani, who is reached through love.
Kalatita kalyana kalpanta kari,
Sada sajjanananda data purari,
Chidananda sandoha mohapahari,
Prasida prasida prabho manmathari.Beyond all parts and all time, goodness itself, who brings each age of the world to its close; who always gives joy to good people, the foe of the three demon cities; a mass of awareness and bliss, who takes delusion away: be pleased, be pleased, O Lord, foe of the god of love.
Na yavad Umanatha padaravindam,
Bhajantiha loke pare va naranam,
Na tavat sukham shanti santapa nasham,
Prasida prabho sarvabhutadhivasam. As long as people do not worship the lotus feet of Uma’s Lord, they find no happiness, no peace and no end to their pain, in this world or the next. Be pleased, O Lord, who lives in every being.
Na janami yogam japam naiva pujam,
Natoham sada sarvada Shambhu tubhyam,
Jara janma duhkhaugha tatapyamanam,
Prabho pahi apannamamisha Shambho.I know nothing of yoga, of japa or of worship; I can only bow to you, Shambhu, always and at every moment. I am scorched by the flood of sorrows that are old age, birth and death: protect me in my trouble, Lord. I bow to you, O Lord Shambhu.
