Shiv Mahimna Stotra

Pushpadanta’s hymn to the greatness of Lord Shiva, opening “Mahimnah param te”: no words reach the end of his glory, so anyone may praise him as far as the mind can go. In English letters, with the meaning of every verse.

43 verses in four partsAbout 20 min to recite

Tradition tells that the gandharva Pushpadanta stole flowers from a king’s garden, stepped unknowing on flowers offered to Lord Shiva and lost his powers, and won them back with this hymn. It praises Shiva beyond all words, tells his deeds, from the pillar of fire to the burning of Tripura, and bows to him in every form; the last verses give the fruit of reciting it. Verses 1 to 10: beyond words and thought

  1. Verse 1

    Mahimnah param te paramavidusho yadyasadrishi
Stutir brahmadinam api tad avasannas tvayi girah,
    Athavachyah sarvah svamati parinamavadhi grinan
    Mamapyesha stotre Hara nirapavadah parikarah.

If praise from one who does not know the full reach of your greatness falls short of you, then even the words of Brahma and the gods fall short. So no one is to blame who praises you as far as his own mind can reach; and this effort of mine to praise you, O Hara, is beyond blame too.

  2. Verse 2

Atitah panthanam tava cha mahima vanmanasayor
Atadvyavrittya yam chakitam abhidhatte shrutir api,
Sa kasya stotavyah katividhagunah kasya vishayah
Pade tvarvachine patati na manah kasya na vachah.

Your greatness lies beyond the path of speech and mind; even the Vedas speak of it in awe, only by saying what it is not. Who can praise it? How many are its qualities? Whose mind can hold it? Yet when you take a form, whose mind does not turn to you, whose words do not?

  3. Verse 3

    Madhusphita vachah paramam amritam nirmitavatas
Tava brahman kim vag api suraguror vismayapadam,
Mama tvetam vanim gunakathana punyena bhavatah
    Punamityarthe smin puramathana buddhir vyavasita.

You made the Vedas, words sweet with honey, the highest nectar, O Brahman: can even the speech of Brihaspati, teacher of the gods, fill you with wonder? It is to make my own words pure by the merit of telling your virtues, O destroyer of the three cities, that my mind has set out on this.

  4. Verse 4

Tavaishvaryam yat taj jagad udaya raksha pralaya krit
Trayi vastu vyastam tisrishu gunabhinnasu tanushu,
    Abhavyanam asmin varada ramaniyam aramanim
    Vihantum vyakroshim vidadhata ihaike jadadhiyah.

Your glory creates, keeps and dissolves the world; the three Vedas speak of it, shared among three forms of different qualities, Brahma, Vishnu and Rudra. Yet, O giver of boons, some dull minds here raise loud arguments against it, pleasing to the unworthy but in truth unlovely.

  5. Verse 5

Kim ihah kim kayah sa khalu kim upayas tribhuvanam
Kim adharo dhata srijati kim upadana iti cha,
    Atarkyaishvarye tvayyanavasara duhstho hatadhiyah
Kutarko yam kamshchin mukharayati mohaya jagatah.

“With what wish, what body, what means, what support does the creator make the three worlds, and from what stuff?” This false reasoning has no ground against you, whose glory is beyond reasoning; it only sets some confused minds chattering, to lead the world astray.

  6. Verse 6

Ajanmano lokah kim avayavavanto pi jagatam
    Adhishthataram kim bhavavidhir anadritya bhavati,
Anisho va kuryad bhuvanajanane kah parikaro
Yato mandas tvam pratyamaravara samsherata ime.

Can the worlds, made of parts, be without a birth? Can the world come to be without regard to one who rules it? And if there were no Lord, who else could gather the means to make it? Yet, O best of the gods, the foolish doubt you.

  7. Verse 7

Trayi sankhyam yogah pashupatimatam vaishnavam iti
Prabhinne prasthane param idam adah pathyam iti cha,
    Ruchinam vaichitryad riju kutila nanapathajusham
Nrinam eko gamyas tvam asi payasam arnava iva.

The three Vedas, Sankhya, Yoga, the teaching of Pashupati, the Vaishnava way: on these different paths people say “this is highest” or “that is best”, as their tastes differ. Yet as every river, straight or winding, reaches the ocean, you alone are the goal of all people on all their many paths.

  8. Verse 8

Mahokshah khatvangam parashur ajinam bhasma phaninah
    Kapalam chetiyat tava varada tantropakaranam,
Surastam tam riddhim dadhati tu bhavad bhru pranihitam
Na hi svatmaramam vishaya mriga trishna bhramayati.

An old bull, a club topped with a skull, an axe, a deer skin, ash, serpents and a skull: this, O giver of boons, is all you own. Yet the gods hold all their wealth by a mere movement of your brow. The mirage of the senses cannot lead astray one who delights in his own Self.

  9. Verse 9

Dhruvam kashchit sarvam sakalam aparas tvadhruvam idam
    Paro dhrauvyadhrauvye jagati gadati vyastavishaye,
Samaste pyetasmin puramathana tair vismita iva
Stuvan jihremi tvam na khalu nanu dhrishta mukharata.

One says this whole world lasts for ever; another says it all passes away; a third says that in its different parts it both lasts and passes. Wonder-struck at them all, O destroyer of the three cities, I praise you and am not ashamed: chattering is bold indeed.

  10. Verse 10

Tavaishvaryam yatnad yad upari virinchir harir adhah
    Parichchhettum yatav analam anala skandhavapushah,
Tato bhakti shraddha bhara guru grinadbhyam Girisha yat
Svayam tasthe tabhyam tava kim anuvrittir na phalati.

When Brahma went up and Vishnu went down, trying hard to find the limits of your glory, you stood as a pillar of fire, and they could not. Then, as they praised you, heavy with devotion and faith, O Girisha, you showed yourself to them of your own will. Does following you not bear fruit?

Verses 11 to 24: his deeds

  1. Verse 11

    Ayatnad apadya tribhuvanam avairavyatikaram
Dashasyo yad bahun abhrita rana kandu paravashan,
Shirah padma shreni rachita charanambhoruha baleh
Sthirayas tvad bhaktes tripurahara visphurjitam idam.

Ravana, the ten-headed, won the three worlds without effort and left himself no enemy, and still his arms itched for battle: O destroyer of the three cities, that was the flowering of his steady devotion, which laid his heads like a row of lotuses at your lotus feet.

  2. Verse 12

Amushya tvat seva samadhigata saram bhujavanam
Balat kailase pi tvad adhivasatau vikramayatah,
    Alabhya patale pyalasa chalitangushtha shirasi
Pratishtha tvayyasid dhruvam upachito muhyati khalah.

But when he turned that forest of arms, whose strength came from serving you, against Kailash itself, your own home, you idly moved the tip of your toe, and he could find no footing even in the underworld. Surely the wicked, once grown strong, lose their wits.

  3. Verse 13

Yad riddhim sutramno varada paramochchair api satim
    Adhashchakre banah parijana vidheya tribhuvanah,
Na tach chitram tasmin varivasitari tvach charanayor
    Na kasyapyunnatyai bhavati shirasas tvayyavanatih.

The demon Bana, who held the three worlds as his servants, set below him the wealth of Indra, high as it was. That is no wonder, O giver of boons, in one who worshipped your feet: whose head, bowed to you, does not rise?

  4. Verse 14

Akanda brahmanda kshaya chakita devasura kripa
    Vidheyasyasid yas trinayana visham samhritavatah,
Vikaro pi shlaghyo bhuvana bhaya bhanga vyasaninah.

When the gods and demons were terrified that the universe would end before its time, O three-eyed one, you took pity and swallowed the poison. Does the dark stain it left on your throat not make you more beautiful? Even a flaw is praised in one whose passion is to end the fear of the world.

  5. Verse 15

    Asiddhartha naiva kvachid api sadevasuranare
Nivartante nityam jagati jayino yasya vishikhah,
Sa pashyannisha tvam itara sura sadharanam abhut
Smarah smartavyatma na hi vashishu pathyah paribhavah.

The arrows of Kama, the god of love, conquer the whole world and never come back without striking home, among gods, demons or men. Yet when he looked on you, O Lord, as if you were any other god, he became a mere memory. To slight the self-controlled brings no good.

  6. Verse 16

    Mahi padaghatad vrajati sahasa samshayapadam
Padam vishnor bhramyad bhuja parigha rugna grahaganam,
Muhur dyaur dausthyam yatyanibhrita jata tadita tata
Jagad rakshayai tvam natasi nanu vamaiva vibhuta.

When you dance to protect the world, the earth is suddenly in danger from the stamping of your feet; the sky, the realm of Vishnu, has its planets battered by your whirling, mace-like arms; and heaven is shaken again and again, its sides lashed by your flying matted hair. Strange indeed is your might.

  7. Verse 17

Viyad vyapi taragana gunita phenodgama ruchih
Pravaho varam yah prishata laghu drishtah shirasi te,
Jagad dvipakaram jaladhi valayam tena kritam ity
Anenaivonneyam dhrita mahima divyam tava vapuh.

The stream of the Ganga, which fills the sky and whose foam shines brighter with the stars, looks no bigger than a drop on your head; yet it made the world into islands ringed by the seas. From this alone one may guess how vast is your divine body.

  8. Verse 18

Rathah kshoni yanta shatadhritir agendro dhanur atho
    Rathange chandrarkau rathacharanapanih shara iti,
Didhakshos te ko yam tripura trinam adambara vidhir
Vidheyaih kridantyo na khalu paratantrah prabhudhiyah.

The earth your chariot, Brahma your charioteer, the king of mountains your bow, the sun and moon its wheels, Vishnu, who holds the discus, your arrow: why all this display, to burn up the straw that was Tripura? The Lord plays with what serves him; his will depends on nothing else.

  9. Verse 19

Hariste sahasram kamala balim adhaya padayor
Yad ekone tasmin nijam udaharan netrakamalam,
    Gato bhaktyudrekah parinatim asau chakravapusha
    Trayanam rakshayai tripurahara jagarti jagatam.

Vishnu laid a thousand lotuses at your feet as his offering, and when one was missing, he plucked out his own lotus eye to make up the number. That rush of devotion took the form of the discus, and in that form, O destroyer of the three cities, it stays awake to guard the three worlds.

  10. Verse 20

Kratau supte jagrat tvam asi phalayoge kratumatam
Kva karma pradhvastam phalati purusharadhanam rite,
Atas tvam samprekshya kratushu phaladana pratibhuvam
Shrutau shraddham baddhva dridha parikarah karmasu janah.

When the sacrifice is over, you stay awake to join those who sacrificed to its fruit: how could a rite, once ended, bear fruit without the worship of the Lord? So, seeing you as the pledge that sacrifices will bear fruit, people put their faith in the Vedas and hold firmly to their rites.

  11. Verse 21

    Kriyadaksho dakshah kratupatir adhishas tanubhritam
    Rishinam artvijyam sharanada sadasyah suraganah,
    Kratubhramshas tvattah kratuphala vidhana vyasanino
Dhruvam kartuh shraddha vidhuram abhicharaya hi makhah.

Daksha, skilled in rites and lord of beings, was the one who offered the sacrifice; the seers were its priests and the gods its guests. Yet, O giver of refuge, it was ruined by you, for those bent on the fruits of ritual alone. Surely a sacrifice without faith in the Lord turns to harm for the one who offers it.

  12. Verse 22

Prajanatham natha prasabham abhikam svam duhitaram
Gatam rohid bhutam riramayishum rishyasya vapusha,
Dhanushpaner yatam divam api sapatrakritam amum
Trasantam te dyapi tyajati na mrigavyadha rabhasah.

Brahma, lord of creatures, lusting after his own daughter, followed her in the form of a stag when she became a doe. You took up your bow and pierced him with an arrow, O Lord, and though he fled to the sky, even now the fury of the hunter in you does not let him go, and he trembles there still.

  13. Verse 23

    Svalavanyashamsa dhrita dhanusham ahnaya trinavat
Purah plushtam drishtva puramathana pushpayudham api,
Yadi strainam devi yamanirata dehardha ghatanad
Avaiti tvam addha bata varada mugdha yuvatayah.

O destroyer of the three cities, the goddess saw Kama, the flower-armed god of love, who had taken up his bow trusting in her beauty, burned up before her like straw in an instant. If she still thinks you are won by a woman, because her penance won her half your body, O giver of boons, it is because young women are innocent.

  14. Verse 24

    Shmashaneshvakrida smarahara pishachah sahacharash
    Chitabhasmalepah srag api nrikaroti parikarah,
Amangalyam shilam tava bhavatu namaivam akhilam
Tathapi smartrinam varada paramam mangalam asi.

You play in the cremation grounds, O destroyer of Kama; goblins are your companions; you smear yourself with the ash of the pyres; your garland is of human skulls. Let all your ways be called inauspicious: still, O giver of boons, for those who remember you, you are the highest good.

Verses 25 to 32: the One in all things

  1. Verse 25

Manah pratyak chitte savidham avadhayatta marutah
    Prahrishyad romanah pramada salilotsangita drishah,
    Yad alokyahladam hrada iva nimajyamritamaye
Dadhatyantas tattvam kim api yaminas tat kila bhavan.

The yogis hold their breath as the scriptures teach and turn the mind inward to the heart; their hair stands on end, their eyes brim with tears of joy, and seeing some truth within, they rejoice as if plunged in a lake of nectar. That truth, surely, is you.

  2. Verse 26

Tvam arkas tvam somas tvam asi pavanas tvam hutavahas
Tvam apas tvam vyoma tvam u dharanir atma tvam iti cha,
Parichchhinnam evam tvayi parinata bibhrati giram
Na vidmas tat tattvam vayam iha tu yat tvam na bhavasi.

“You are the sun, you the moon, you the wind, you the fire; you the waters, you the sky, you the earth and you the Self”: so the wise speak of you, in words that set limits. But we know of nothing in this world that you are not.

  3. Verse 27

Trayim tisro vrittis tribhuvanam atho trin api suran
    Akaradyair varnais tribhir abhidadhat tirnavikriti,
Turiyam te dhama dhvanibhir avarundhanam anubhih
Samastam vyastam tvam sharanada grinatyom iti padam.

O giver of refuge, the word Om names you: with its three letters, A, U and M, it names the three Vedas, the three states of waking, dream and sleep, the three worlds and the three gods; with its subtle sound it reaches your fourth state, beyond all change; it names you whole and in your parts.

  4. Verse 28

Bhavah sharvo rudrah pashupatir athograh saha mahams
Tatha bhimeshanav iti yad abhidhanashtakam idam,
Amushmin pratyekam pravicharati deva shrutir api
Priyayasmai dhamne pranihita namasyo smi bhavate.

Bhava, Sharva, Rudra, Pashupati, Ugra, Mahan the great, Bhima and Ishana: the Vedas, O God, move through each of these eight names of yours. To you, the dearest abode, I bow with all my heart.

  5. Verse 29

Namo nedishthaya priyadava davishthaya cha namo
Namah kshodishthaya smarahara mahishthaya cha namah,
Namo varshishthaya trinayana yavishthaya cha namo
Namah sarvasmai te tad idam iti sharvaya cha namah.

Salutations to you who are nearest, O lover of the forest, and to you who are farthest; salutations to the smallest, O destroyer of Kama, and to the greatest; salutations to the eldest, O three-eyed one, and to the youngest; salutations to you who are all, and to Sharva, who is all this.

  6. Verse 30

    Bahularajase vishvotpattau bhavaya namo namah
Prabalatamase tat samhare haraya namo namah,
    Janasukhakrite sattvodriktau mridaya namo namah
Pramahasi pade nistraigunye shivaya namo namah.

Salutations again and again to Bhava, full of rajas, who brings the universe forth; to Hara, full of tamas, who dissolves it; to Mrida, full of sattva, who makes people happy; and to Shiva, the shining state beyond the three qualities.

  7. Verse 31

    Krishaparinati chetah kleshavashyam kva chedam
Kva cha tava gunasimollanghini shashvad riddhih,
Iti chakitam amandikritya mam bhaktir adhad
    Varada charanayos te vakya pushpopaharam.

How small is my mind, weak and in the grip of sorrow, and how boundless your glory, which passes every limit of qualities! Though I was struck with wonder at this, devotion made me bold, O giver of boons, and laid at your feet this offering of flowers made of words.

  8. Verse 32

    Asitagiri samam syat kajjalam sindhupatre
    Surataruvara shakha lekhani patram urvi,
    Likhati yadi grihitva sharada sarvakalam
Tadapi tava gunanam isha param na yati.

If the black mountain were the ink, the ocean its pot, a branch of the wish-granting tree of heaven the pen and the earth the page, and if Sharada, goddess of learning, took them and wrote for all time, even then, O Lord, she would not reach the end of your virtues.

Verses 33 to 43: the poet, and the fruit of reciting it

  1. Verse 33

    Asura sura munindrair architasyendumaule
    Grathita guna mahimno nirgunasyeshvarasya,
    Sakala gana varishthah pushpadantabhidhanah
Ruchiram alaghu vrittaih stotram etach chakara.

Pushpadanta, the best of all Shiva’s attendants, made this lovely hymn in long metres to the Lord who wears the moon on his head and is worshipped by demons, gods and great sages: whose glory is woven of qualities, though he is beyond qualities.

  2. Verse 34

    Aharahar anavadyam dhurjateh stotram etat
Pathati parama bhaktya shuddhachittah puman yah,
    Sa bhavati shivaloke rudratulyas tathatra
    Prachuratara dhanayuh putravan kirtimamshcha.

Whoever reads this flawless hymn to Dhurjati, the Lord of the matted locks, day after day, with the deepest devotion and a pure heart, becomes like Rudra in the world of Shiva, and here on earth has wealth in plenty, long life, children and fame.

  3. Verse 35

Maheshan naparo devo mahimno napara stutih,
Aghoran naparo mantro nasti tattvam guroh param.

There is no god higher than Mahesha and no praise higher than the Mahimna; no mantra higher than the Aghora, and no truth higher than the guru.

  4. Verse 36

Diksha danam tapas tirtham jnanam yagadikah kriyah,
Mahimnah stava pathasya kalam narhanti shodashim.

Initiation, charity, austerity, pilgrimage, knowledge, sacrifices and all other rites are not worth a sixteenth part of reading the hymn of the Mahimna.

  5. Verse 37

    Kusumadashana nama sarvagandharvarajah
    Shishu shashidhara mauler devadevasya dasah,
Sa khalu nija mahimno bhrashta evasya roshat
    Stavanam idam akarshid divyadivyam mahimnah.

Kusumadashana, “flower-toothed”, king of all the gandharvas, was a servant of the God of gods, who wears the young moon on his head. Fallen from his glory through the Lord’s anger, he made this most divine hymn to his greatness.

  6. Verse 38

    Suravara munipujyam svargamokshaikahetum
    Pathati yadi manushyah pranjalir nanyachetah,
    Vrajati shivasamipam kinnaraih stuyamanah
    Stavanam idam amogham pushpadanta pranitam.

If anyone reads, with joined palms and a mind on nothing else, this unfailing hymn made by Pushpadanta, honoured by the best of gods and sages, the one cause of heaven and of freedom, he goes to be near Shiva, praised by the kinnaras.

  7. Verse 39

    Asamaptam idam stotram punyam gandharvabhashitam,
    Anaupamyam manohari shivam ishvaravarnanam.

Here ends this holy hymn, spoken by the gandharva: beyond compare, delighting the heart, auspicious, a portrait of the Lord.

  8. Verse 40

Ityesha vanmayi puja shrimach chhankara padayoh,
Arpita tena deveshah priyatam me sadashivah.

This worship made of words is offered at the feet of Shri Shankara: may Sadashiva, Lord of the gods, be pleased with me by it.

  9. Verse 41

Tava tattvam na janami kidrisho si maheshvara,
Yadrisho si mahadeva tadrishaya namo namah.

I do not know your true nature, what you are like, O Maheshvara; whatever you are, O Mahadeva, to you as you are, salutations again and again.

  10. Verse 42

Ekakalam dvikalam va trikalam yah pathen narah,
    Sarvapapa vinirmuktah shivaloke mahiyate.

Whoever reads it once a day, twice or three times, is freed of every sin and honoured in the world of Shiva.

  11. Verse 43

    Shri pushpadanta mukha pankaja nirgatena
    Stotrena kilbishaharena harapriyena,
    Kanthasthitena pathitena samahitena
    Suprinito bhavati bhutapatir maheshah.

By this hymn that flowed from the lotus mouth of Pushpadanta, which takes away sin and is dear to Hara, when it is learned by heart and recited with a settled mind, Mahesha, Lord of all beings, is well pleased.

  • With what · Sit before a Shiva linga or an image of Lord Shiva, offer water or milk, bilva leaves and white flowers, and light a ghee diya.
  • To close · End with verse 41, “Tava tattvam na janami”, I do not know your true nature; whatever you are, salutations to you as you are. Then bow.
