Lakshmi Chalisa

सिन्धु सुता मैं सुमिरौं तोही।
ज्ञान बुद्धि विद्या दो मोही॥

Sindhu suta main sumiron tohi,
Gyan buddhi vidya do mohi.

Daughter of the ocean, I remember you; give me knowledge, good sense and learning.

हे सागर की पुत्री, मैं आपका स्मरण करता हूँ; मुझे ज्ञान, अच्छी बुद्धि और विद्या दीजिए।

तुम समान नहिं कोई उपकारी।
सब विधि पुरवहु आस हमारी॥

Tum saman nahin koi upkari,
Sab vidhi puravahu aas hamari.

No one does as much good as you do; fulfil all my hopes, in every way.

आपके जैसा भला करने वाला और कोई नहीं है; मेरी सारी आशाएँ हर तरह से पूरी कीजिए।

जय जय जगत जननि जगदम्बा।
सबकी तुम ही हो अवलम्बा॥

Jai jai jagat janani Jagadamba,
Sabki tum hi ho avalamba.

Glory, glory to you, Jagadamba, Mother of the world; you alone are the support of everyone.

हे जगत की माता जगदम्बा, आपकी जय हो, जय हो; आप ही सबका सहारा हैं।

तुम ही हो सब घट घट वासी।
विनती यही हमारी खासी॥

Tum hi ho sab ghat ghat vasi,
Vinati yahi hamari khasi.

You live in every heart, in every single being; this is my special prayer to you.

आप ही हर प्राणी के हृदय में बसती हैं; मेरी आपसे यही खास विनती है।

जगजननी जय सिन्धु कुमारी।
दीनन की तुम हो हितकारी॥

Jagjanani jai Sindhu kumari,
Dinan ki tum ho hitkari.

Glory to you, Mother of the world and daughter of the ocean; you are the friend of the poor and helpless.

हे जगत की माता, सागर की पुत्री, आपकी जय हो; आप दीन-दुखियों का भला करने वाली हैं।

विनवौं नित्य तुमहिं महारानी।
कृपा करौ जग जननि भवानी॥

Vinavaun nitya tumahin Maharani,
Kripa karau jag janani Bhavani.

Great Queen, I pray to you every day; Bhavani, Mother of the world, be kind to me.

हे महारानी, मैं रोज़ आपसे प्रार्थना करता हूँ; हे जगत की माता भवानी, मुझ पर कृपा कीजिए।

केहि विधि स्तुति करौं तिहारी।
सुधि लीजै अपराध बिसारी॥

Kehi vidhi stuti karaun tihari,
Sudhi lijai apradh bisari.

How can I ever praise you as you deserve? Forget my faults and look after me.

मैं आपकी स्तुति किस तरह करूँ? मेरी गलतियों को भुलाकर मेरी सुध लीजिए।

कृपा दृष्टि चितवो मम ओरी।
जगजननी विनती सुन मोरी॥

Kripa drishti chitavo mam ori,
Jagjanani vinati sun mori.

Turn your kind eyes towards me; Mother of the world, listen to my prayer.

अपनी कृपा भरी दृष्टि मेरी ओर कीजिए; हे जगत की माता, मेरी विनती सुनिए।

ज्ञान बुद्धि जय सुख की दाता।
संकट हरो हमारी माता॥

Gyan buddhi jai sukh ki data,
Sankat haro hamari mata.

Glory to you, who give knowledge, good sense and happiness; Mother, take my troubles away.

ज्ञान, बुद्धि और सुख देने वाली माँ, आपकी जय हो; हे माता, मेरे संकट दूर कीजिए।

क्षीरसिन्धु जब विष्णु मथायो।
चौदह रत्न सिन्धु में पायो॥

Kshirsindhu jab Vishnu mathayo,
Chaudah ratna sindhu mein payo.

When Vishnu had the ocean of milk churned, fourteen treasures came up out of the ocean.

जब भगवान विष्णु ने क्षीरसागर का मंथन करवाया, तब सागर से चौदह रत्न निकले।

चौदह रत्न में तुम सुखरासी।
सेवा कियो प्रभु बनि दासी॥

Chaudah ratna mein tum sukhrasi,
Seva kiyo Prabhu bani dasi.

Among those fourteen treasures you were the store of all happiness, and you served the Lord as his humble servant.

उन चौदह रत्नों में आप सुख का भंडार थीं, और आपने दासी बनकर प्रभु की सेवा की।

जब जब जन्म जहां प्रभु लीन्हा।
रूप बदल तहं सेवा कीन्हा॥

Jab jab janm jahan Prabhu linha,
Roop badal tahan seva kinha.

Whenever and wherever the Lord was born, you took a new form and served him there.

प्रभु ने जब-जब और जहाँ-जहाँ जन्म लिया, आपने वहाँ अपना रूप बदलकर उनकी सेवा की।

स्वयं विष्णु जब नर तनु धारा।
लीन्हेउ अवधपुरी अवतारा॥

Swayam Vishnu jab nar tanu dhara,
Linheu Avadhpuri avatara.

When Vishnu himself took a human body, he was born in Ayodhya, the city of Avadh, as Rama.

जब स्वयं विष्णु ने मनुष्य का शरीर धारण किया, तब उन्होंने अवधपुरी, यानी अयोध्या, में राम के रूप में अवतार लिया।

तब तुम प्रगट जनकपुर माहीं।
सेवा कियो हृदय पुलकाहीं॥

Tab tum pragat Janakpur mahin,
Seva kiyo hriday pulkahin.

Then you appeared in Janakpur as Sita, and served him with a heart full of joy.

तब आप जनकपुर में सीता के रूप में प्रकट हुईं, और आनंद से भरे हृदय से उनकी सेवा की।

अपनायो तोहि अन्तर्यामी।
विश्व विदित त्रिभुवन की स्वामी॥

Apnayo tohi Antaryami,
Vishva vidit tribhuvan ki swami.

The Lord who knows every heart took you as his own; the whole world knows you as the queen of the three worlds.

सबके मन की बात जानने वाले प्रभु ने आपको अपनाया; सारा संसार जानता है कि आप तीनों लोकों की स्वामिनी हैं।

तुम सम प्रबल शक्ति नहिं आनी।
कहं लौ महिमा कहौं बखानी॥

Tum sam prabal shakti nahin aani,
Kahan lau mahima kahaun bakhani.

There is no other power as mighty as you; how far could I go in telling of your greatness?

आपके जैसी प्रबल शक्ति और कोई नहीं है; मैं आपकी महिमा का बखान कहाँ तक करूँ?

मन क्रम वचन करै सेवकाई।
मन इच्छित वांछित फल पाई॥

Man kram vachan karai sevkai,
Man ichchhit vanchhit phal pai.

Whoever serves you in thought, in deed and in word receives the reward their heart longs for.

जो मन, कर्म और वचन से आपकी सेवा करता है, उसे मनचाहा फल मिलता है।

तजि छल कपट और चतुराई।
पूजहिं विविध भाँति मनलाई॥

Taji chhal kapat aur chaturai,
Pujahin vividh bhanti man lai.

Leaving behind trickery, deceit and cunning, they worship you in many ways with all their heart.

छल, कपट और चालाकी छोड़कर लोग पूरे मन से तरह-तरह से आपकी पूजा करते हैं।

और हाल मैं कहौं बुझाई।
जो यह पाठ करै मन लाई॥

Aur haal main kahaun bujhai,
Jo yah path karai man lai.

Let me explain still more: for whoever recites this with their mind fixed on it,

मैं और भी समझाकर बताता हूँ: जो कोई मन लगाकर यह पाठ करता है,

ताको कोई कष्ट न होई।
मन इच्छित पावै फल सोई॥

Tako koi kasht na hoi,
Man ichchhit pavai phal soi.

no trouble ever comes to them, and they receive the very reward their heart wishes for.

उसे कोई कष्ट नहीं होता, और वह वही फल पाता है जो उसका मन चाहता है।

त्राहि त्राहि जय दुःख निवारिणी।
त्रिविध ताप भव बंधन हारिणी॥

Trahi trahi jai dukh nivarini,
Trividh taap bhav bandhan harini.

Save me, save me! Glory to you who end sorrow, who take away the three kinds of suffering and free us from the bonds of worldly life.

रक्षा कीजिए, रक्षा कीजिए! दुख मिटाने वाली माँ, आपकी जय हो; आप तीनों तरह के कष्ट और संसार के बंधन दूर करती हैं।

जो चालीसा पढ़ै पढ़ावै।
ध्यान लगाकर सुनै सुनावै॥

Jo Chalisa padhai padhavai,
Dhyan lagakar sunai sunavai.

Whoever reads this Chalisa or has it read, or listens to it or recites it to others with full attention,

जो इस चालीसा को पढ़ता या पढ़वाता है, या ध्यान लगाकर इसे सुनता और सुनाता है,

ताको कोई न रोग सतावै।
पुत्र आदि धन सम्पत्ति पावै॥

Tako koi na rog satavai,
Putra aadi dhan sampatti pavai.

is troubled by no illness, and is blessed with a son and every other blessing, with wealth and property.

उसे कोई रोग नहीं सताता, और उसे पुत्र आदि सुख, धन और संपत्ति मिलती है।

पुत्रहीन अरु संपति हीना।
अन्ध बधिर कोढ़ी अति दीना॥

Putrahin aru sampati hina,
Andh badhir kodhi ati dina.

Those who have no child and no wealth, the blind, the deaf, those with leprosy and the very poor,

जिनके संतान नहीं है, जिनके पास धन नहीं है, और जो अंधे, बहरे, कोढ़ से पीड़ित या बहुत गरीब हैं,

विप्र बोलाय कै पाठ करावै।
शंका दिल में कभी न लावै॥

Vipra bolay kai path karavai,
Shanka dil mein kabhi na lavai.

should call a learned brahmin to recite it for them, and never let doubt into their heart.

वे किसी विद्वान ब्राह्मण को बुलाकर इसका पाठ करवाएँ, और मन में कभी शंका न लाएँ।

पाठ करावै दिन चालीसा।
ता पर कृपा करैं गौरीसा॥

Path karavai din chalisa,
Ta par kripa karain Gaurisa.

Whoever has it recited for forty days receives the grace of Gaurisa, the lord of Gauri.

जो चालीस दिन तक इसका पाठ करवाता है, उस पर गौरी के स्वामी, गौरीश, कृपा करते हैं।

सुख सम्पत्ति बहुत सी पावै।
कमी नहीं काहू की आवै॥

Sukh sampatti bahut si pavai,
Kami nahin kahu ki aavai.

They gain a great deal of happiness and wealth, and never run short of anything at all.

उसे बहुत सा सुख और धन मिलता है, और उसे किसी भी चीज़ की कमी नहीं होती।

बारह मास करै जो पूजा।
तेहि सम धन्य और नहिं दूजा॥

Barah maas karai jo puja,
Tehi sam dhanya aur nahin duja.

No one else is as blessed as the one who worships you all twelve months of the year.

जो बारहों महीने आपकी पूजा करता है, उसके जैसा धन्य दूसरा कोई नहीं है।

प्रतिदिन पाठ करै मन माहीं।
उन सम कोइ जग में कहुं नाहीं॥

Pratidin path karai man mahin,
Un sam koi jag mein kahun nahin.

There is no one anywhere in the world like the person who recites this in their heart every day.

जो रोज़ मन ही मन यह पाठ करता है, उसके जैसा संसार में कहीं कोई नहीं है।

बहुविधि क्या मैं करौं बड़ाई।
लेय परीक्षा ध्यान लगाई॥

Bahuvidhi kya main karaun badai,
Ley pariksha dhyan lagai.

Why should I go on praising it in so many ways? Try it for yourself, with full attention.

मैं इसकी बड़ाई तरह-तरह से क्यों करूँ? ध्यान लगाकर आप खुद इसे परख लीजिए।

करि विश्वास करै व्रत नेमा।
होय सिद्ध उपजै उर प्रेमा॥

Kari vishvas karai vrat nema,
Hoy siddh upjai ur prema.

Whoever keeps the vow and its rules with faith succeeds, and love for you grows in their heart.

जो विश्वास के साथ व्रत और नियम का पालन करता है, उसका काम सिद्ध होता है और उसके हृदय में प्रेम उपजता है।

जय जय जय लक्ष्मी भवानी।
सब में व्यापित हो गुण खानी॥

Jai jai jai Lakshmi Bhavani,
Sab mein vyapit ho gun khani.

Glory, glory, glory to you, Lakshmi Bhavani; you are present in everything, a mine of every virtue.

हे लक्ष्मी भवानी, आपकी जय हो, जय हो, जय हो; आप सबमें बसी हैं और सारे गुणों की खान हैं।

तुम्हरो तेज प्रबल जग माहीं।
तुम सम कोउ दयालु कहुं नाहिं॥

Tumharo tej prabal jag mahin,
Tum sam kou dayalu kahun nahin.

Your radiance is mighty in the world; nowhere is there anyone as kind as you.

संसार में आपका तेज बहुत प्रबल है; आपके जैसा दयालु कहीं कोई नहीं है।

मोहि अनाथ की सुधि अब लीजै।
संकट काटि भक्ति मोहि दीजै॥

Mohi anath ki sudhi ab lijai,
Sankat kati bhakti mohi dijai.

Look after me now, for I have no one else; cut away my troubles and give me devotion.

मुझ अनाथ की अब सुध लीजिए; मेरे संकट काटकर मुझे अपनी भक्ति दीजिए।

भूल चूक करि क्षमा हमारी।
दर्शन दीजै दशा निहारी॥

Bhool chook kari kshama hamari,
Darshan dijai dasha nihari.

Forgive my mistakes and slips; see the state I am in, and let me see you.

मेरी भूल-चूक क्षमा कीजिए; मेरी दशा देखकर मुझे दर्शन दीजिए।

बिन दर्शन व्याकुल अधिकारी।
तुमहि अछत दुःख सहते भारी॥

Bin darshan vyakul adhikari,
Tumahi achhat dukh sahate bhari.

Without a sight of you, your devotee is restless; even while you are here, he bears a heavy sorrow.

आपके दर्शन के बिना आपका यह भक्त व्याकुल है; आपके रहते हुए भी वह भारी दुख सह रहा है।

नहिं मोहिं ज्ञान बुद्धि है तन में।
सब जानत हो अपने मन में॥

Nahin mohin gyan buddhi hai tan mein,
Sab janat ho apne man mein.

There is no knowledge or good sense in me; you know all of this in your own mind.

मुझमें न ज्ञान है, न बुद्धि; आप अपने मन में यह सब जानती हैं।

रूप चतुर्भुज करके धारण।
कष्ट मोर अब करहु निवारण॥

Roop chaturbhuj karke dharan,
Kasht mor ab karahu nivaran.

Take on your form with four arms, and now take my suffering away.

अपना चार भुजाओं वाला रूप धारण करके अब मेरा कष्ट दूर कीजिए।

केहि प्रकार मैं करौं बड़ाई।
ज्ञान बुद्धि मोहि नहिं अधिकाई॥

Kehi prakar main karaun badai,
Gyan buddhi mohi nahin adhikai.

How can I praise you as I should? I do not have much knowledge or understanding.

मैं आपकी बड़ाई किस तरह करूँ? मेरे पास ज़्यादा ज्ञान और बुद्धि नहीं है।

रामदास अब कहै पुकारी।
करो दूर तुम विपति हमारी॥

Ramdas ab kahai pukari,
Karo door tum vipati hamari.

Now Ramdas, the poet, calls out to you aloud: Mother, take my misfortune far away.

अब कवि रामदास पुकारकर कहते हैं: हे माँ, आप मेरी विपत्ति दूर कीजिए।
