Old and ill, with a pain in his arms that no medicine eased, Sant Goswami Tulsidas turned to Lord Hanuman. The first verses praise the hero who leapt the ocean and burned Lanka; from verse 20 the poet pleads, complains of the delay and threatens the pain itself in Hanuman’s name. For now this page gives only the 15 verses whose every line two independent texts give letter for letter; the other 29 are held back until their reading is settled. Reciting from memory? Chhappay: verses 1 and 2

  1. Verse 1

Sindhu taran, Siya soch haran, rabi baal baran tanu,
Bhuj bisal, murati karal kalahu ko kal janu,
Gahan dahan nirdahan Lank nihsank, bank bhuv,
Jatudhan balvan maan mad davan Pavansuv,
Kah Tulsidas sevat sulabh, sevak hit santat nikat,
Gun ganat, namat, sumirat, japat, saman sakal sankat vikat.

He leapt across the ocean and ended Sita’s grief; his body glows like the rising sun. His arms are long and his form is fearsome, as if he were death to death itself. With frowning brows and no fear at all he burned Lanka, a thick forest that no fire could burn; the son of the wind crushes the pride and arrogance of the mighty demons. Tulsidas says: he is easy to reach for those who serve him, and always close by to help his servants. Singing his virtues, bowing to him, remembering him and repeating his name puts an end to every trouble, however terrible.

  2. Verse 2

Svarn sail sankas koti rabi tarun tej ghan,
Ur bisal, bhujdand chand nakh bajra bajratan,
Ping nayan, bhrikuti karal rasana dasananan,
Kapis kes, karkas langur, khal dal bal bhanan,
Kah Tulsidas bas jasu ur Marutsut murati bikat,
Santap paap tehi purush pahin sapnehun nahin aavat nikat.

He shines like a mountain of gold, a mass of light like ten million suns at noon. His chest is broad, his arms are mighty, and his nails and body are as hard as thunderbolts. His eyes are tawny; his brows, tongue, teeth and face are fearsome; his hair is reddish brown and his tail is rough, and he breaks the strength of the hordes of the wicked. Tulsidas says: sorrow and sin do not come near, even in a dream, to the one who keeps this awesome form of the wind god’s son in his heart.

Ghanakshari: his deeds and his glory

  1. Verse 5

Bharat mein Parath ke rathketu kapiraj, gajyo suni Kururaj dal halbal bho,
Kahyo Dron Bhisham Sameersut mahabeer, beer ras bari nidhi jako bal jal bho,
Banar subhay balkeli bhoomi bhanu lagi, phalang phalanghun ten ghati nabhatal bho,
Nai nai maath jori jori haath jodha johain, Hanuman dekhe jagjeevan ko phal bho.

In the Mahabharata war the king of the monkeys sat on the flag of Arjuna’s chariot, and when he roared, the army of the Kaurava king was thrown into panic. Drona and Bhishma said: this is the great hero, the son of the wind, whose strength is the water of an ocean of valour. As a child, in a monkey’s playful way, he leapt from the earth to the sun, and the whole sky was too small for his bound. Warriors bowed their heads again and again and joined their hands as they gazed at him: to have seen Hanuman was the reward of a whole life in this world.

  2. Verse 6

Gopad payodhi kari Holika jyon lai Lank, nipat nisank parpur galbal bho,
Dron so pahar liyo khyal hi ukhari kar, kanduk jyon kapikhel bel kaiso phal bho,
Sankat samaj asamanjas bho Ramraj kaaj jug poogani ko kartal pal bho,
Sahasi samatth Tulsi ko naah jaki baanh, lokpal palan ko phir thir thal bho.

He made the ocean as small as a cow’s hoofprint and set Lanka ablaze like a Holi bonfire; utterly fearless, he threw the enemy’s city into uproar. He pulled up a mountain like Drona as if in play and held it in his hand like a ball, like a bel fruit in a monkey’s game. When troubles crowded in and King Rama’s work hung in doubt, he did in a moment, as if on his palm, what would take ages. Tulsi’s master is bold and able; his arm became once more a firm ground on which the guardians of the worlds could keep their realms.

  3. Verse 8

Doot Ramray ko, sapoot poot Paun ko, tu Anjani ko nandan pratap bhuri bhanu so,
Siya soch saman, durit dosh daman, saran aaye avan, Lakhan priy pran so,
Dasmukh dusah daridra daribe ko bhayo, prakat tilok ok Tulsi nidhan so,
Gyan gunvan balvan seva savdhan, saheb sujan ur aanu Hanuman so.

You are King Rama’s messenger, the worthy son of the wind, Anjani’s darling, with glory as great as the sun’s. You end Sita’s grief and crush sin and wrongdoing; you protect all who come to you for refuge, and Lakshmana loves you as his own life. To break the unbearable poverty that was ten-headed Ravana, you appeared in the three worlds like a treasure, Tulsi says. Wise, full of virtue, strong and watchful in service: O mind, keep in your heart a wise master like Hanuman.

  4. Verse 9

Davan duvan dal bhuvan bidit bal, Bed jas gaavat bibudh bandichhor ko,
Paap taap timir tuhin vighatan patu, sevak saroruh sukhad bhanu bhor ko,
Lok parlok ten bisok sapne na sok, Tulsi ke hiye hai bharoso ek or ko,
Ram ko dularo daas Bamdev ko nivas, naam kali kamtaru Kesari kisor ko.

He crushes the armies of the enemy and his strength is known in every world; the Vedas and the gods sing the fame of the one who freed the captives. He is skilled at scattering the darkness and the frost of sin and suffering, the morning sun that gladdens the lotuses, his servants. Tulsi has no fear for this world or the next, and no sorrow even in dreams, for his heart trusts in one alone: Rama’s beloved servant, the son of Kesari, in whom Shiva dwells, whose name is the wish-granting tree in this age of Kali.

  5. Verse 10

Mahabal seem, mahabheem, mahabanait, mahabeer bidit barayo Raghubeer ko,
Kulis kathor tanu jor parai ror ran, karuna kalit man dharmik dheer ko,

He is the very limit of strength, the most fearsome, a great warrior, the great hero known to all as the one Rama chose. His body is hard as a thunderbolt and when he fights the battlefield roars, yet his mind is full of compassion, steady and righteous. Terrible as death to the wicked and a guardian of the good, he takes away Tulsi’s pain when he is remembered. The bold son of the wind brings joy to Sita, is dear to Rama, and comes to the help of his servants.

  6. Verse 15

Man ko agam, tan sugam kiye Kapees, kaaj Maharaj ke samaj saaj saaje hain,
Dev bandichhor ranror Kesarikisor, jug jug jag tere birad biraje hain,
Beer barjor, ghati jor Tulsi ki or suni sakuchane sadhu, khalgan gaaje hain,
Bigari sanvar Anjanikumar keeje mohin, jaise hot aaye Hanuman ke nivaje hain.

Lord of the monkeys, with your body you made easy what the mind cannot even reach, and set in order every task of the great king Rama. Son of Kesari, who freed the gods, whose roar fills the battle, your titles have shone in the world age after age. Mighty hero, hearing that your strength towards Tulsi has grown less, the good hang their heads and the wicked roar. Son of Anjani, put right what has gone wrong for me, as it has always been put right for those whom Hanuman has blessed.

Savaiya: the first complaint

  1. Verse 17

Tere nivaje gareebnivaj birajat bairin ke ur saale,
Sankat soch sabai Tulsi liye naam phatai makari ke se jaale,
Boodh bhaye, bali, merihi baar, ki haari pare bahutai nat paale.

What you have set up not even Shiva can uproot, and who, O monkey, can make firm again the homes you have brought down? Those you have blessed, protector of the poor, live in splendour and are a thorn in the hearts of their enemies. Tulsi says, at your name every trouble and worry tears apart like a spider’s web. Have you grown old, I ask you with love, just now when my turn has come, or are you worn out from caring for so many who bowed to you?

  2. Verse 19

Achchh bimardan kanan bhani Dasanan aanan bha na niharo,
Baridnad Akampan Kumbhakaranna se kunjar kehari baro,
Ram pratap hutasan, kachchh, bipachchh, sameer Sameerdularo,
Paap ten, saap ten, taap tihun ten sada Tulsi kahan so rakhvaro.

You crushed Akshaya Kumara and laid waste the Ashoka grove, and ten-headed Ravana could not look you in the face. To elephants such as Meghnad, Akampana and Kumbhakarna you were a young lion. Rama’s glory is a fire, his enemies are the dry brush, and the wind’s beloved son is the wind that drives the flames. He is always Tulsi’s guard against sin, against curses and against the three kinds of suffering.

Ghanakshari: the pain in the arm

  1. Verse 20

Janat jahan Hanuman ko nivajyau jan, man anumani, bali, bol na bisariye,
Seva jog Tulsi kabahun kaha chook pari, saheb subhav kapi sahibi sanbhariye,
Apradhi jani keejai sasati sahas bhanti, modak marai jo, tahi mahur na mariye,
Sahasi Sameer ke dulare Raghubeer ju ke, baanh peer mahabeer begi hi nivariye.

The whole world knows that I am one whom Hanuman has blessed; think on this, I beg you, and do not forget your word. When was Tulsi ever fit to serve you, and what fault has he committed now? Remember your nature as a master, O monkey lord, and keep up your lordship. If you find me guilty, punish me in a thousand ways; but one who would die of a sweet should not be killed with poison. Bold one, beloved of the wind and of Rama, great hero, take away the pain in my arm, and quickly.

  2. Verse 21

Balak biloki, bali, bare ten aapno kiyo, deenbandhu daya keenhi nirupadhi nyariye,
Raavro bharoso Tulsi ke, raavroi bal, aas raavriyai, daas raavro bichariye,
Bado bikaral kali, kako na bihal kiyo, maathe pagu bali ko, nihari so nivariye,
Kesarikisor, ranror, barjor beer, baanhu peer Rahumatu jyon pachhari mariye.

Seeing me a child, you made me your own from my earliest days; friend of the humble, you showed me a rare kindness that asked for nothing in return. Tulsi trusts in you alone; his strength is yours and his hope is yours; think of him as your servant. This age of Kali is terrible, and whom has it not tormented? The mighty one’s foot is on my head: look, and push it away. Son of Kesari, roaring in battle, mighty hero, throw down this pain in my arm and kill it, as you killed Simhika, the mother of Rahu.

  3. Verse 22

Uthape thapan thir thape uthapanhar, Kesarikumar bal aapno sanbhariye,
Ram ke gulamani ko kamtaru Ramdoot, mose deen doobare ko takiya tihariye,
Saheb samarth toson Tulsi ke maathe par, sou apradh binu beer, baandhi mariye,
Pokhari bisal baanhu, bali barichar peer, makari jyon pakari kai badan bidariye.

You set firm again what was uprooted, and uproot what was set up: son of Kesari, call up your strength. Messenger of Rama, wish-granting tree for Rama’s servants, a poor weak one like me leans on you alone. With a master as able as you over Tulsi’s head, brave one, should he be bound and beaten without any fault? My long arm is a pond, I beg you, and this pain is a creature in its water; seize it as you seized the crocodile in the lake, and tear its jaws apart.

  4. Verse 24

Lok parlokahun tilok na bilokiyat, tose samarath chash charihun nihariye,
Karm, kaal, lokpal, ag jag jeevjaal, naath haath sab nij mahima bichariye,
Khaas daas raavro, nivas tero tasu ur, Tulsi so dev dukhi dekhiyat bhariye,
Baat tarumool baanhusool kapikachchhu beli, upaji sakeli kapikeli hi ukhariye.

In this world and the next, in all three worlds, no one as able as you is to be seen, however one looks, with the eyes of the body or of the heart. Karma, time, the guardians of the worlds and every creature, moving or still, are all in your hands, Lord; think of your own greatness. Tulsi is your very own servant and you live in his heart, yet, O god, he is seen in great pain. This pain in my arm is a creeper of itching cowhage that has sprung from the root of a tree of wind; pull it up and clear it away, as a monkey would at play.

Ghanakshari: the last plea

  1. Verse 43

Seetapati saheb sahay Hanuman nit, hit updes ko Mahes mano guru kai,
Maanas bachan kaay saran tihare paany, tumhare bharose sur main na jaane sur kai,
Byadhi bhootjanit upadhi kahu khal ki, samadhi keeje Tulsi ko jani jan phur kai,
Kapinath Raghunath Bholanath Bhootnath, rogsindhu kyon na dariyat gaay khur kai.

Sita’s lord is my master, Hanuman is my help at all times, and I hold Shiva as my guru for good counsel. In mind, word and body I have taken refuge at your feet; trusting in you, I have never known any other gods as gods. Whether it is illness, or trouble raised by spirits or sent by some wicked person, put an end to it, knowing Tulsi truly as your own. Lord of the monkeys, Lord of the Raghus, Bholanath, lord of the spirits: why not shrink this ocean of illness to a cow’s hoofprint?

How to recite it

  • When · On Tuesdays and Saturdays, on Hanuman Jayanti, and in times of pain or illness, as a prayer alongside a doctor’s care, never instead of it.
  • How many times · Once is complete. Some recite it every day for 21 or 40 days as a vow.
  • With what · Sit before an image of Lord Hanuman with a ghee diya, sindoor and red flowers. Some keep a pot of water beside them while they recite and drink it afterwards.
  • To close · End with a prayer to Lord Rama, as the verses do, then sing the Hanuman Aarti.
