Vishnu Sahasranamam

The thousand names of Lord Vishnu that Bhishma gave Yudhishthira from his bed of arrows, in the Anushasana Parva of the Mahabharata, with the opening prayers, the dhyana and the phalashruti. In English letters, with the meaning of every verse.

165 verses in five partsAbout 30 min to recite

Yudhishthira asks who is the one God, and what chant frees a person from birth and death; Bhishma answers with these names. The names themselves are the 108 verses of the stotram, from “Vishvam Vishnur vashatkaro”, and each part is numbered from 1, as it is recited. The viniyoga and nyasas that some books give before the dhyana, and the verses some add after the close, are left out for now, as the sources do not agree on them. Reciting from memory? Prasanna vadanam dhyayet sarva vighnopashantaye.

Meditate on Vishnu, dressed in white, bright as the moon, four-armed, with a calm and smiling face, so that every obstacle is stilled.

Vighnam nighnanti satatam Vishvaksenam tam ashraye.

I take refuge in Vishvaksena, the leader of Vishnu’s hosts, whose hundred and more attendants, the elephant-faced one first among them, keep striking down every obstacle.

I bow to Vyasa, of the line of Vasishtha, grandson of Shakti, son of Parashara and father of Shuka: without a stain, a treasure of austerity.

May Mukunda, full of joy, holding the discus, the lotus, the mace and the conch, make us pure.
