  • How · Sit facing east at sunrise, or north, with a straight back. Chant it 3, 11 or 108 times on a mala of rudraksha or tulsi beads, moving one bead with each recitation, aloud, softly or in the mind.
  • Offering · At sunrise many offer water to the sun (arghya) from a copper pot, chanting the mantra as the water falls.
  • Learning it · It is the first mantra many children learn, and it is given formally at the sacred thread ceremony (upanayana), whispered by a father or teacher.
